A question for Locomotive Engineers
Posted by AlcoRS11Nut on Monday, November 3, 2003 6:30 PM
Most people I talk to think I am nuts for wanting to become a Locomotive Engineer, and laugh it off like "yeah, and you'll fly to the moon by flapping your arms next, right?" I am just wondering if any other Locomotive Engineers had something like that when growing up. Thanks for answering
I love the smell of ALCo smoke in the Morning. "Long live the 251!!!" I miss the GBW and my favorite uncle is Uncle Pete. Uncle Pete eats Space Noodles for breakfast.

Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a train engineer. I. too, thought it to be 'just a dream'.

However, through a series of (for this purpose, irrelevant) events, I had an opportunity to hire as a switchman for the CNW in '73. Actually, they did not hire me straightaway, I was merely given the opportunity to fill out a job application. I had to become such a pest arounf the yard office (I would stop in 3 times per week, to see if anything was 'happening'), that I think they finally hired me to get rid of me. But I wanted it that bad. A year later I was granted a transfer into engine service, and a year after that, I was running trains. The point is, that if you wnat it, do not let anyone stand in your way.

And anyone that thinks less of you for persuing your dream, either they are jealous that you actually do have a dream, or they are not true friends, and if that is the case, who cares what they think?!

The railroad sucks! I whine about deadheading back on the second unit, moan about no time off, hate management, cry about no rest and no social life and will fight to the end to keep my job. Yep, I guess that in some sick and demented way I actually love this job.

Sounds sort of like the Army: they don't want anybody wants to stay, so everyone who wants to stay gripes about it...

I have always wanted to be one, but... it wasn't the 'right' thing to do. Man, if you want to do it, go for it!

Go for it! As Oliver Hardy once said, "Life's not short enough." How many people can say they have a job that they like? I can, even though as previous posters mention, it was not the "right thing" to do.
