Another fallen giant
Posted by CShaveRR on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 8:01 PM

I  just saw a report on another website telling of the passing of Don Dover, at age 83.  Don was the editor of Extra 2200 South from 1968 until sometime in the 1990s, and could, if not directly then through his magazine, be credited for much of the knowledge that enables railfans to spot locomotives through various details, and to tell more about them than any ordinary spotter's guide would be capable of presenting.

Soon after the C&OHS published the book on C&O diesels that I had authored (or edited, as I termed it then), I got a phone call from Don Dover congratulating me on the good job.  He was just as lavish in his praise in the next issue of X2200.  Knowing his stress on the need to report accurately and with detail, I felt that his compliments were the absolute highest honor one could receive (unfortunately, that meant that one could only go downhill from there!).

I met him and his son Dan once in person (at an EMD open house).

My condolences to Dottie and Dan.
