Interesting-looking thing.  Dig the cupola!

Nice to see that it was saved from the torch...

Amsted Rail-Mid Contenent Musuem Donation
Posted by bnsfkline on Sunday, November 12, 2006 9:19 PM

The Mid-Contenent Railroad Musuem in North Freedom, WI is about to recieve a rare piece of Rolling stock from Amsted Rail.  Originally Destened for the scrappers torch, ASFX 1946 is in the process of being donated to the Wisconsin Musuem. Whats so special about this car? ASFX 1946 is a homebuilt, one of a kind generator car converted from a tropp sleeper right after WWII. This car was bought by ASF in 1946 and has since logged many miles, From remote lines like the Alaska to the UP line in Nebraska. The car was last used in the early 1970's and has since been stored at ASF in Granite City, IL. The car has sat there on the North 40 track for the past 25 years, and was originally going to be scrapped. However, we can all thank Mr. Steve Goaring, Yard Department  Supervisor at ASF's Granite City Facility.

Here is a photo of the car that is to be donated :

NOTE: This facility also uses an as-built GE 44 tonner, complete with Friction bearing trucks and Mechanical throttle systems.
