Actually, the Union Pacific Railroad people at one time had purchased experimental Well-Cars from Trinity Industries for testing.

Norfolk Southern has a large fleet of Intermodal Flat Cars already. TTX and CP provide NS with the Intermodal Well Cars built by Gunderson, NSC, and Trinity-Thrall.

Thrall Car Articulated Auto Carriers have TTX colors and are operated by Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. The same concept would apply to the rest of the intermodal equipment pool with TTX.

I understand the history of TTX, but I'm curious why BNSF made such a heavy investment in well cars while Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern apparently have not. Do they own larger shares in TTX?

TTX is owned by the major railroads and each one is allotted a certain amount of cars according to the amount that they own in the company.  They are also allowed to burrow car amounts from the other companies that may not be using their total amount that they have a right to.  So basically, UP, CSX, and NS do own the rights to use intermodal well cars.  Along with the other cars that TTX owns, flats, centerbeams, autoracks, and boxcars.

Of the current Class Is, I have seen well cars from BNSF and Canadian Pacific. I have seen HO models of CSX well cars. But I'm curious why I never have seen any from Union Pacific or Norfolk Southern. Did they not invest in any? If so, why not? Are they content to run intermodal traffic on TTX well cars or lease them from smaller carriers like Florida East Coast? (I know that UP inhertied SP's fleet).
