Still looking for a job
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 7:27 AM
Well, as you are aware I attended a hiring session for UP.
But, still no status updates on the other 7 different jobs I applied for with them.
BNSF, wont even interview me....out of close to 25 jobs I applied for, some of which I had several years experience in, no invitations to an interview or hiring session were offered.
The other half are still pending.
Of course, BNSF laid off a bunch of workers in Feb of this year, so they might be filling these positions with the furloughed or laid off employees.
Then again...
Anyway, the wait and search continues.
I am thinking about applying for a job as an "Alligator Massage Therapist" or "Shark Dentist".

I think you are looking in a tough economy and even with the 30/60 RR Retirement clearing out some of the old heads; the use of RCL, lower rail traffic and other factors (for example employees eligible to retire staying on due to the poor economy and also perhaps their conversion of 401k plans to 201ks in the poor stock markets) are holding down the real need for new hires on the RR.

Also, NS is now having a middle management buyout to induce managers to retire in the interests of cost cutting. CSX also laid off a sizeable group of managers recently. With all of these folks likely to be on the market IT jobs and other railroad management jobs are likely to be in short supply as these folks look to continue their employment in the industry, perhaps at the UP or BNSF.

I think if you really want a RR job you will have to make some tough choices, perhaps relocating or working for a short line or both. Many of us came to the industry via these routes as Class 1s hired very few people between the early 70s and early 80s. It may not be a lot of fun but it works...

I think you both are right.
Especially, since all 8 of the offers at the hiring session I was at all went to Machinists and Nechanics wanting to enter Train Service for its better job security.
Oh well.....hey, I tried.

Ney-

If there's one thing I learned about hiring out on the railroad, it is NEVER GIVE UP. If it is what you really want you will eventually get it. Of course, it will probably come at the most inconvenient time, but, hey, that's the railroad...
