The Last is the First....

I wa reading the current Trains and there is an article about former D&M RS2 #469 still running. The strange part of the article is that the pictures appear to show a RS3 #469. Is this really a late model RS2 in a RS3 carbody, or is the author off base with his information? My guess is that this is an RS3 .....

D&M RS-2s were extensively rebuilt by ALCO in 1956. The units were stripped to the frame and new then modern components were installed. There is a photo of #466 at Schenectady in Richard Steinbrenner"s Alco A Centennial Remembrance on page 365. So yes the #469 looks a lot like an RS-3, but the frame is still original!

D&M further rebuilt these, starting with the 469 during the spring of 1979. This included moving the battery box from under the body and putting it on the walkway on the short hood end. Also added were 1600 gallon fuel tank and fixed snowplows.
