Lost engines of Roanoke
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, September 21, 2003 7:06 PM
Hi
I am looking into getting a group together to purchase the
Lost engines of Roanoke http://lostengines.railfan.net/
Initally I am trying to find if there are enough people
who are willing to spend some time working on this project.

Phase One consists of the following:

Getting enough people into the group to help with the legwork
necessary
If only a few people are interested then it will be very hard or
impossible.
the more people who we can get into the core group the eaiser it
will
be
for each person.

We need a Non Profit organization set up.I do not know what it will
take or cost but I am looking into it at the University where I
work.We have a Law School so
I can ask one of our law professors about how to set it up.

Check out the web site on the lost engines and see if you or anyone
you know
may be able to help. With enough people in the core group it can be
easy.

Please reply to me with the subject lost engines

I checked the website, its last update indicates those pictures were taken at least 2 1/2 years ago.

are you sure those locomotives still even exist?
just wondering.

Hi Andrew,
Contact tom, at
tom@kingswayrc.com
or try
http://www.kingswayrc.com/gcst/hours.htm

This guy heads the Gulf Coast Chapter of the NHRS, and runs the Gulf Coast Railroad meuseum in Houston, Texas.
He has resecued several Alco S2, and can give you ideas on how to set up your non profit orginazation.
He also can help you with your recruiting ideas.
They moved a "lost" alco from way out in the weeds to their meuseum, and can give you tips on that also.
Last time I "talked" to him, he was a very pleasent and gracious guy.
Couldnt hurt to ask someone who has already done this how they went about it!
Stay Frosty,
and good luck.
Ed

Andrew [:)]

Thank you for the info. Thank you for caring enough to do something. We need more people like you to help older eqiupment survive. It is a piece of history and when they are gone only pictures remain. The article is much better than a picture especially when it is a steam engine.

I wish you all the luck in the world. Please keep us posted. I viewed the pics of your "garden", someone has a green thumb. Too bad it wasn't tomatoes and not just vines. Hopefully you will be able to raise enough money to get the engines out from under the vines and under a roof and begin the task of restoring them. Hopefully at least one could be returned to steam.

Again good luck and Godspeed.

It always makes very happy to see something like this being done! It angers me to see historic pieces of railroad equipment (especiall steam engines) left to rust. We need more people like you in this world! I wish you the very best of luck in getting these engines restored and hopefully even running!

Also, there are other pieces of railroad equipment in simmilar predicaments that should get saved. A very excellent website with information on all known lost or abandoned pieces of railroad equipment that exist (or are rumoured to exist) in the US is http://nt1.foothill.net/rumorweb . It lists everything by state, so you can find if there's anything near where you live. Hopefully some of these can get saved, too.
