Great article. I learned something about a place I've been many times but never knew about. Most of my trips there have been to visit the Cosmosphere, not to be missed.

There's only one (non-railroad) thing I disagree with.

From article: "If you do decide to visit, Hutch offers plenty of food, drink, and lodging, mostly grouped on the north and northeast side of town. Heading north on Main Street from the Amtrak depot will take you directly to eating establishments. I recommend the bacon cheeseburger and malt from Braum’s."

[xx(]YUCK! Eat a Fazoli's. Fast, fresh, affordable Italian that's good for your, plus free unlimited breadsticks (they have subsandwiches in addition to pasta and pizza). It's up there across the street from the mall on East 11th Ave east of the UP RR tracks and west of the airport.

If you're coming from a long distance and have some extra time spend a half a day in Wichita. You can visit the Great Plains Transportation Museum on Douglas Ave downtown and see Santa Fe 4-8-4 #3768 and Santa Fe FP45 #93 and Exploration Place on the river to see the giant O-scale model railroad of Kansas. Just ask anybody here where the trains are (cause that's all they gripe about all day! [;)])

I used to live in McPherson. I used to go down to Hutch all the time and watch the UP all day long. Really didn't see very many BNSF. I mainly was down around Main St. down there at the depot. I have some pics of exDRGW 3086. It was the first GP40 to be painted in SP speed lettering. As an added bonus, it has a full headlight package. It has the top ones, the oscillating light in the nose, marker lights on the side of the nose plus ditchlights. I got several good shots of this unit while it was there. If I can find a way to get them on the topic then I will work on it and see what I can do for everybody. I will agree with you on the Fazoli's, excellant place to eat, but the place is on the west side of the tracks, not east. It is across from the mall, but west of the tracks. Well have fun, I am planning on coming up there someday soon to do some shooting and chasing. Talk to ya later,
