I know this place where all you need to do is go to a class for 3 weeks, then work for 6 months and go back to school for 5 weeks and after that you get to drive any loco on the RR, everyday!

Not for everybody but it is a trip...

I've been to the Portola railroad museum in Ca. and rented a loco.. They have a balloon track that you go round and round for 1hr. Switchers are $95 p/hr, road units are $125 p/hr and if you rent 1 of each it's $200. Ihad a lot of fun and cant wait to go back.

i have read about r.r. clubs that sponsor 'engineer-for-a day' rides.. for $300-500 (depends on which engine is wanted), you receive several hours of 'look-see' at the controls of an engine.. then you sit in the main chair and run it.. a club may have 1 or 2 engines or a half-dozen.. steam and diesel--several models offered depending on what they could buy and restore cheap..

one club only allows going back and forth for 1-2 hours.. another offers 4-hour slots.. they do this for 2-3 months a year.. one offered to actually travel miles along the r-o-w to 'deliver' loads and return with 'empties'..

clubs were located in il, ca and vt.. has anyone tried this? how was it?
