This afternoon shortly after 3:00 p.m.CSX derailed in the town of Amsterdam, NY on the busy double track Water Level Route. 14 cars derailed including tank cars. Both tracks are blocked. Early news reports indicated the possibility of a hazardous material release and hazmat crews were summoned to the scene. Evacuations of nearby homes were commenced and local highways were closed. Forty families were evacuated and are being cared for by the local Red Cross. No timetable for reopening the line has been set. No injuries were reported. FRA inspectors enroute to investigate.

CSX began detours south from Syracuse over the NYS&W.

After 9:00 p.m. a westbound NYS&W freight derailed in Paterson, NJ eight cars derailed with at least one striking a building housing a car wash. The cars contained construction and demolition debris. No injuries were reported. FRA inspectors enroute to investigate. It is unclear what effect this second derailment will have upon the detours from the CSX derailment.
