With today's power blackouts in New York and other cities in the NE part of the country I can't help but remember being in New York in the 1960's (I believe it was in 1964) when the "BIG" blackout happened that was the subject of the movie "Where Were You When The Lights Went Out?". I also remember being on many old NYC/Metro North m.u trains in the hot weather when the third rail failed and we were stuck in those steel "microwave trays" in 100 plus degree heat! My sincere condolences to those going through that tonight (it is a cool 86 degrees here in Chicago metro). Jim

I agree with eolafan. Here in central Texas it was a cool 85 degrees. I was wondering with some of you from the Northeast what it was like getting around. Yes, I know what the news says, and we will hear, read in mags and news for sometime, but what it was like.

Today in Omaha it is was 86. Yesterday it was 85. Too bad it wasn't 86 or 85 in New York City today. It was something like 93.

While we are waiting for them to come back, anyone know if they did bring in diesels to move the people or was that also a snarled mess due to no signals?

the ne corridor was definetely affected.they did bring some diesels to help out.We were ok but my in-laws lost power until 3 am this morning,

Not sure about this time, but in the past when I lived in the NYC area and they lost power such as last night the MetroNorth signal systems did go out and stopped all train traffic. Jim

No doubt that the Detroit, Toledo and other city residents had a touch time of it, but fortunatly for them their transportation systems are not as dependent on electricity as NYC's is (except for traffic signals, which is the case everywhere). Little question that NYC commuters had it the worst being that the subways and other trains carry a VERY large percentage of the commuters every single day (I seem to recall the percentage is about 60%). I couldn't beleve it but last month we tied the record in Ca. for the most consecutive days over 100 degrees with 17. Not once did we have a heat related power failure
