i don't think that UP wants to buy or invest in CSX. it does'nt need to since it does bussiness with CSX & NS. if a merger were to happen. who will it effect UP NS CSX. or will the rail industry just go down in flames and everybody goes back to the trucks.. the other interstate hauler.

With the TFM deal off, this opens the door to another railroad to take the reigns of the most profitable railroad in Mexico. Unfortunately, this may mean Union Pacific may be in the offing. I ain't a UP fan, and I will never be one. But, maybe BNSF could take control of TFM. That would really stick on the management of the UP, because it essentially hands off its traffic to its enemy. This also allows BNSF to market their direct, seamless service to Mexico. However, UP could do that, and that would really boost the profits of the UP. This Mexican deal could spark the rest of the merger mania, because with Mexico, the winner of the deal then goes after the East Coast and the Canadian markets, forcing the other to follow suit. Maybe all of this should be consummated at one time, so if there would be a meltdown, it only happens once. Or even that, maybe hold the merger in stages, and ease the way into the two rail system in North America. Or nothing can happen at all, and that would be boring. Maybe Amtrak could keep us occupied.

Well, today is September 13, 2003 and over a month has passed since the above was posted on August 12, 2003. By my math that means two months have passed and nothing has happened. No announcement or even any new rumors. I hope this shows you were looking at a railroad rumor.

CSX-DS

The new UP HQ is being built in Omaha, see their website. I would not jump to the conclusion that all would be peaches and cream with UP.

For Targubright--

Sorry I did not respond sooner. I been out of town on business more than in town lately.

Regarding the monorail for Dallas. When Dart was in its infancy and studying transit options a Dallas city councilman, Max Goldblat, AKA Mad Max, proposed a Disneyland type of monorail. The plus is that a monocolumn supported monorail could run on the median of any road. On the negative side is the high cost and limited carrying capacity. Fortunately the board (before my tenure began) decided to go with the tried and true conventional light rail car on 115 pound rail. When jumping through the various federal funding hoops for new line funding we have to evaluate all modes including maglev and monorail. Fortunately these modes are dropped early in the game.

Our airport is replacing their rubber tire operatorless line between the terminals with an overhead system that will be operational in the spring. The new system will be more extensive than the current system and run much faster. The new system will be over the loading gates and afford a great view of the airport operations. When everyone moves to Louis Menk Drive in Fort Worth after the merger (fat chance!!!) you will have the opportunity to see the new airport system, our 44 mile light rail system, and our commuter line between Dallas and Fort Worth.

Cheers,

I think that the railroads, as they are right now, are too big for their own good. No one seems to know what the other person is doing, yet sometimes they are working on the same exact things. Can you imagine if you add another 22 thousand miles? That seems like a receipe for disaster.....I vote to make the railroads smaller. Not bigger

Whoever buys CSX next I hope they have better artistic taste than in the past. CSX paint scheme is ugly, Conrail's was ugly, PC was ugly, and NYC/PRR were ugly.

Why can't they look as cool as the big railroads of the west (UP, Santa Fe, Great Northern, CB&Q, etc or some of the smaller roads of the East--D&H, Rutland, LV, and some of the larger ones like Southern, ACL, and NH)?

I AM.

I have a hundred shares now about 1.6 million to go before I have controlling interest. And once I do.......There will be all steam passenger service to compete with Amtrak and new paint schemes to reflect the fallen flags. And once I do that, I'm going after BNSF. I'm going to break the company up and sell off the parts...one called ATSF and one called BN.

So watch out.

We will, right after the first pigs take flight... Oh, BTW, to buy 5% of shares (or more) in a publicly traded company you have to file notice with the SEC. Also, I think the IRS will sure be interested in knowing about it...

UP just finished their new headquarters in downtown Omaha - very nice rather large building! You would love Omaha - especially in the winter - it is very icy and very hilly!
