Sitting in the dining area, you have a huge, panoramic view of the shared trackage, just above Sullivan's curve and the UP line above that. While ordering, waiting and eating, I saw 3 trains go by. Nice place for lunch.

Well if I were to stop patronizing a chain every time I got bad service then I would have no where to eat. All the chains have bad service at one time or another. What do you expect from low paid overworked employees.

Even if there were a McDonald's near one of my favorite train watching spots, I would never choose to eat there. I stopped at a McDonald's out on W. 12th Street in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on the way out to our local HO scale club a few years ago and the high school aged girls who were busy working behind the counter were too busy to wait on me, and when I finally did get service it was the last time I would set foot in a McDonald's store. They lost a customer and I will not do business with McDonald's again. Never!!

CNW used to restrict trains to 50 through DeKalb. UP eventually lifted that restriction, and there is no longer anything in the timetable specifically slowing trains down for the city.

However, for reasons cited above, it is unlikely that many, if any, trains will actually blow through DeKalb at 70. The only trains that equipment restrictions will allow to go that fast would be intermodals and auto trains, and traffic density onthe line will more often than not slow them down as well.

I was in DeKalb the day before yesterday and stopped at McD's for a shake. The less said about the shake, the better--the parking lot has an obtrusive wooden fence trackside (you can't watch trains from the car very well). Nothing came through in the few minutes I was there, but I encountered several trains along 38 between there and Elburn.

Not necessarily! I could tell you about the McDonalds in San Jose that told me they ran out of meat (huh?!??)... or the McDonalds near O'Hare airport that employed someone solely to hand stacks of napkins to customers during the lunch rush.

I don't think that I've ever seen anything (car, train, plane, etc) go through DeKalb at 70mph. I always thought that the UP slowed the freights through DeKalb because of the long angled crossing that goes through the intersection of Lincoln Hwy (Rt 38) and a side street in downtown DeKalb. Also, there's the usual UP traffic jam of trains backed-up trying to get into Chicago area terminals that seems to slow everything down.

I've been to the McD's in DeKalb a few times becasue it's next door to the DeKalb depot.

ALL OF McDONALDS SUCK!

If you want QUALITY fast food, I nominate Burger King and Taco Bell.

Wonder if there are any that are trackside?

First off, I don't think there is such a thing at a best McDs anywhere. IMHO, the chow there is akin to low grade dog food. That I wouldn't feed to my dog. Period.

If you you are in the Cajon Pass area in socal, I suggest you check out the various In-n-Out Burger locations.

IIRC, there is one in Berdoo at I-15 exit to the depot, one in Hesperia and one in Barstow.

If you want McGarbage, go to the arches. If you want a serious buger cooked the way you want, go to In-n-Out. No question about it.

If you're on Cajon and want to eat,you don't have to go all the way into San Berdoo.Grab a burger,or other sandwich at Joes Cafe in Devore.Better food than Mc D's and it is right next to the tracks[:D]!

Also, I wasn't sure if I would survive coming home and telling my wife I had a "three way" at the Skyline for lunch. Only a skyline fan would get that one.

I don't let my wife forget I ate Skyline also. I haven't figured out why she rolls the window down halfway home after we have eaten there. lol

They actually have the Skyline commissary located somewhere in the West Chester OH area. Don't know where, but the owner of the company I work for lives in West Chester and was telling me about it.

Joe & I did the Skyline after the NMRA National back in July last year. I'll have to check out Riverfront Pizza. The view is great, the food at Skyline is an acquired taste. [8D]

McDonald's??

If you are ever in the Cincinnati Oh area, go across the river to Covington KY and eat at a place called "Riverfront Pizza". You can watch CSX crossing the old C&O bridge over the Ohio River leading into Queensgate.

You will never eat a hoagie like they serve there.

Don't like hoagie's? There's a Skyline Chili right next door. Just pick out a window seat and watch the trains from there.

Timetable speed on UP track through DeKalb is 70. Most trains will be slower than that due to equipment restrictions and *ahem* traffic density. One of the tracks through town (north track, IIRC) is to be relaid with concrete ties this year.

I can't imagine trains going through DeKalb at 70.

On the other hand, mediocre is putting it nicely when referring to McDonalds. Last time I bought breakfast there they gave me an egg mcmuffin without the egg.

Arrgghhhhhh. I still have nightmares about something whcih allegedly contained bacon, egg and something else at Gatwick Airport in the UK whilst waiting for a flight to Aberdeen. Made airline food taste like Michelin 5 stars in comparison.

restaurant - is this an early April Fool?

[dinner] Not to get to off of the topic... Are there any restaurants that have specifically setup so that diners can watch the trains while they eat and advertise as such??

Mcdonalds is consistently mediocre food nation wide. I have eaten at more of them than I can count, and that about sums it up in a sentence. The one in Barstow is pretty cool though.

The resturant you are refering to was Tiffany's. I ate there many times. I even made a deal to buy a car there over breakfast. The resturant closed in the late 90's, I don't remember when. It got vandalized over the years and was in terrible shape, but still there last summer. When I went up there in September I noticed it was completely gone. I looks like it burned down, but it may have been leveled.

I think the McDonalds was built in 99' but don't hold me to that as I was out of the area for a few years. I have ate there probably 100 times but I have never been inside. Just hit the drive through and back to the tracks. I don't know about best in the word though. I think the McDonalds in Barstow is better. Not only is it trackside on a slightly busier main, the dining area is inside an old passenger car!!!!
