Railroading Holiday
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, July 22, 2003 8:25 AM
Ciao, I'm Sergio from Italy.
I'm planning to came to USA for 7 "strong railroading days" along Hudson River Line and Northeast Corridor.
In last months, what about the situation of police controll along RR? Is possible to be stopped from RR police while I take pictures or films, or if I follow some safety rules everything will be ok?
Please let me know.....

See you later.

Sergio-
My suggestions:
Stay in areas of public access only.
Stay away from bridges / tunnels.
Cooperate with all law enforcement.
KEEP OFF OF RAILROAD PROPERTY !

Do NOT let your film pass through electronic (x-ray) security points at the airport--carry all film (both exposed and not exposed) with you on the plane, and ask for "hand inspection" of your film at all security points (take all film out of their boxes; bring only the plastic can the film comes in).

I cannot give you specifics regarding the location you plan on visiting, but hopefully this will help somewhat.

BTW--this advice could be used by all railfans everywhere.

I've had a telephon conversation with "SEA Airport of Milan" security dept. and they told me there're NO problems for tapes under x-ray.......if tapes are for home made videos. The professional tapes are more critical so only for them there are some problems. Into my case I have only home made tapes so......NO PROBLEMS!
Other suggestions?

The x-rays should not harm videotape. Tape, which is magnetic, is not affected by the frequencies of x-rays. But the devices that you walk through are magnetic-field mass anomaly detectors and they will definitely affect magnetic tape.

And do not believe what you hear about x-ray being "film safe". Granted, the effects are greater the higher-speed film you use, but why risk any degradation of your film?

There should be no problem with Customs regarding your recording mediums (tape & film). Just ask that all your recoring material (tapes & film) be "hand inspected" at security checkpoints. I have never been harrassed by security for asking. However, it may take you a few minutes longer to get through security, but is not the delay worth the risk of having all of your recorded memories be lost forever?
