Well well well
I was talking to a hogger this morning about our local depot and if it could be saved.He said the city of Defiance condemmed the depot forcing the maintenance guys to another building.Now the city is asking CSX to clean up its property.Csx won't sell the depot because of liability issues unless you want to move it. Its a 2 story depot kinda hard to do.So it will probably be knocked down.Will keep you updated.

Hate to think the worst about the situation, but it will probably be torn down. It's a shame. To think of all the history there if it could be told. We have too many people that don't care about our history, what has put us where we are today and it is a shame.
Like I had said in a post just days ago, they tore the one in Sparta KY down just a few months ago. All that's left is a blacktopped surface.

You guy's are going to hate me for saying this but here goes. The older local depot's are inefficent. Most lack sufficent insulation and decent plumping or wiring. To make these buildings presentable would cost a small fortune. I would love to save what depot's remain, but we all must realize, it cannot be done.

I have two depot stories. Leon, Kansas had an old Frisco depot. The Burlington Northern owned the but left town after the merger with Santa Fe and tore up the tracks. Appearantly this depot was on the private property of someone. Well, the town had raised funds to save this depot and have it moved, but before they could do it the owner burned the wooden structure to the ground. His reason was he didn't want or didn't want to mess with it.

The second story I have involves the Depot in Herrington, Kansas. Doggone if I can remember what railroad it origionally belonged to (I'll edit this post when I find out), but the Southern Pacific had accuried the right of way of this old railroad and ownership of the depot. The depot was in good condition but they didn't want it. The town was in the process of raising funds to buy it and had big plans for it. However, in the middle of the night the railroad came in and bulldozed it. It was gone by sun up. Like the depot, the SP would soon disappear, too, consumed by the Union Pacific.

If there is some place close by to move it to, it can be done. It would cost quite a bit though. They just moved the old Seaboard depot in Hamlet, NC a few months ago. It was a pretty good size building. Do some searches on the net and you should find some articles on it.

The station which was quite large (two stories) was used as offices of CN until this year when CN closed off the station and built a new, much smaller building. Via Rail serves the town, but passengers use a very small modern depot. CN actually offered to give the station to the city. The only problem was that it would cost at least $1.5 million (Canadian dollars) to renovate. The city council wasn't sure about taking it because of the cost and were undecided. In a few months there has been no news about it. Melville does have a much smaller wood station that is preserved in another part of town that apparently houses a railroad museum, which is never, ever open. In front there is displayed CN pacific 5114 of 1919 with a flatcar and caboose.

Anyone hear of something called "The Great American Station Foundation"? A few years ago I was in Minot, N.D. and there was an Amtrak train that stopped in town for a day to promote this cause. This was a group that was intended to promote the restoration of disused railroad stations around the country and was started by a $2 million fund from Amtrak according to the borchures I still have. At that time the station in Minot was unused except for a small portion that was a bar. I don't know what's happened with it now. This foundation sounded like a good idea, but I don't recall hearing anything about it since then.
