I'll have to disagree on the red cabooses (they're not bad, really!), I would prefer cabooses that matched the locomotives. Actually, I'd pretty much have everything have the same look -- "dirty"!!! Just kidding. [}:)]

I do agree with the Amtrak post. I think the best paint scheme that Amtrak ever used was on one of their E9s, it was black with the "pointless arrow" -- looked very sharp! And a lot better than the Acela...

OTOH, a patriotic red-white-blue scheme might also be the ticket. (Think about that GM&O scheme, with blue for the maroon, and white lettering/striping. I would even consider using the blue on red scheme for passenger trains, and use a red on blue scheme for freight equipment.)

I'm wondering if Amtrak could use a patriotic scheme rather than the silver they currently use. It's just too much like Chicago "L" and not enough like Burlington Zepher... Paint the cars in a patriotic scheme, and let people know who owns it. (Is Amtrak like "American track" or something?)

The orginal B&O Streamline scheme, Blue, Gray, Black with gold trim accents, except on Cincinnatian equipment which had silver/stainless trim accents. When either scheme was clean it was breath taking.

I would choose a scheme based on SPs Black Widow scheme.I would paint the tops of the cabs white, however.Much easier to keep the crews cool.

I would probably go with red-maroon-yellow scheme based on Alton/GM&O and CGW schemes. (Although I've wondered what a simplified red-maroon scheme would look like. Something like the C&NW, with red for yellow and maroon for green.)

OTOH, a patriotic red-white-blue scheme might also be the ticket. (Think about that GM&O scheme, with blue for the maroon, and white lettering/striping. I would even consider using the blue on red scheme for passenger trains, and use a red on blue scheme for freight equipment.)

But then, I've also given some thought to a Christmassy red/dark green scheme. (So far I've only thought about boxcars with red sides and green roofs and ends.)

But cabeese must be bright red.

I'd just steal a good one from the past, probably the old Florida East Coast livery. Other candidates: the SAL passenger scheme (with a prettier shade of green), the Alton scheme, or Rock Island's red, maroon and silver.

I'd go with Armour yellow and gray on the roof, with a nice big shield on the front... Oh wait that's already been done... uh maybe green and orange with big lettering on the sides? Can't do that either...

I'll go with glossy black, silver hand rails, with the road named outlined in gold. Just below the cab window on the side, I'd put an illuminated stop sign... Perhaps an "open mouth" on the front...(a warning.)

If it ran through the Tehachapis, I would paint the locomotives flat black with no markings. After one run the FRA wouldn't be able to tell.

Vic,
Your last was pretty good,as I've had a hard time with my shop crews.
For some reason, they don't always want to work.[:)]

My paint scheme is Dark blue/with yellow cabs(diesels)

And around here,P&L has at least 2 engines painted for Universitys.
One in blue/white for UK,one in red/black for UL[:)]

Well as a model RRer I already do...

The Borracho RR operated in the Arizona/New Mexico border area near 4 corners, up a remote valley serving the town of Borracho Springs, the Borracho Tequila Distillery and the F.U.B.A.R. Mining Consortium.

Its a 3 foot narrow gauge line modeled in large scale,

As for LimitedClear's list? lets see...

1. How would you decide what it would be?

see above[:D]

2. Would you take into account where the RR is located?

see above[:D]

3. Would you use the colors of the state or a university or pro team in the area?

No, because there isnt a University for 200 miles.[:0]

4. Would it have anything to do with commodities hauled?

No unless you count the ore stains on the sides of the cars...[8)]

5. Would it have anything to do with fruits, vegetables, flowers or other things grown there (i.e. Orangle Blossom Special)?

Well we could call it the "Blue Agave Special"...[;)]

6. Would you seek input from others?

Only when they have sobered up a bit...[xx(]

7. What colors would you use?

Grimy black and various shades of rust.. actually the engines DO have a defacto paint scheme...red water saddle tanks and dark green cabs, although the newer gas engines are done in D&RGW Silver.[:)]

8. What types of designs? (stripes? Lettering?)

Whatever the paint shop crews can manage to paint on straight...the "official" Borracho Springs logo was borrowed from the RGS...Shouldnt have built the service facility so close to the distillery aging warehouse.[xx(]

Real story: The Wisconsin Central in my opinion had one of the best paint jobs on an F45. The way the paint scheme came about was really simple. We realized that these engines were kinda special so we were wondering what the RR had planned for them. I called Bob Nadrowski VP mechanical and found out that there really wasn't a plan for them, Jim Fisk was planning on just changing the colors on the Santa Fe scheme. This didn't really sit well with a group of us in the shop, we wanted something unique to WC.
One night on 3rd shift me and Al Lapine were down in the wa***rack with one of the F45s, the flanks of the carbody was damp from the wash job and the humididty, we began tracing out the scheme on the sides of the locomotive. After we were satisfied we sketched it out on paper and submitted it to Mr . Nadrowski . It didn't take long before we saw the first repainted F-45. We were pleased.
