missouri free weekend
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, July 19, 2003 8:45 AM
Hello everyone,

In case any of you are wondering where missouri is over the weekend, I wanted to let everyone know that I've given missouri a "time out" from the site. This was soley my own doing and decision. On Monday, I'll let Erik and others know about this and we'll go from there.

I respect everyone's right to an opinion and freedom of speech. On the other hand, people also have the right to choose what they read and what they listen to. Private sites also have the right to choose what they publish on their sites. Having said that, it's my opinion that missouri has gone on long enough with the anti-railroad postings. Quoting documents and citing references out of context, the tone of his posts and the unrelenting direct accusations made against the railroad and the people who work for the railroads are some of the things that factored into my decision.

So before Monday, I would like to get some feedback from all of you regarding the actions taken against missouri. What do you think about the situation. Do you agree, disagree or feel indifferent?

Thank you,
David Voss

David, bravo my friend! We have heard enough anti-rail rantings from Missouri and need no more. The pages of this forum had been very informative but have degraded due to people like Missouri, and it is time to get back to really meaty railroad issues and make this a fun forum to participate in again. Again, bravo and thanks.

Sir, most of us on this site have had our patience streched to the limit by Missouri. Most of us have given up trying to explain anything to this person. I have attempted several efforts to try to understand his intentions (please note the post I sent him on 13 jul 2003 at 10:12:54 AM under thread titled Safty Literature). He refuses to answer the most basic question directed towards him. I believe he posts stuff just to disrupt this Forum Site.

You guys are getting awfully worked up about missouri. When I was a kid, my parents told me that persons like missouri are either trying to draw attention to themselves or trying to see if they can get someone all worked-up, and that if everyone would ignore them, they'd go away.

Just make him go away!

I view these forums as a means of furthering knowledge about railroading. There are enough idiots to deal with in daily life without having to get into it here. I will admit that all this todo over missouri is slightly amusing though.

rrwitt - I believe that you are correct. missouri may just want attention or he most likely wants to get things started. David, I am thankful that you took him off for the weekend. I was going to the forum less and less because of him!

Missouri has been on other sites and has exhibited the same antisocial behaviors. I think that those of us who have put up with him here and elsewhere have had enough. I certainly don't need that stuff when I decide to come here for relaxation and railroad related conversation.

In sum, Mr. Voss I agree with your decision in nature, but the scope is not yet broad enough. Exile might be more appropriate.

While Mr Pine and myself have strongly dissagreed over just about every aspect of his postings, and share no common point of view, in fact, without ever having met the man, I can state I don't like him, I am not sure I feel comfortable with someone being banned. Granted, this site is the property of Kalmbach, and you are free to do with it as you please.
Yes, its appearent that his postings are designed to do nothing more than cause problems and start fights, with him at the center, getting the attention he has sought since the begining.
But the flip side is, what if I post something no one else agrees with?
Do I get a time out for not being popular?
But, yes, lets see if a time out works, and Mr Pines gets the hint.
If not, then next time, you might poll the users of this site, and see what they would like done. Still not sure I am comfortable with it, but we have to try something.
Stay Frosty,
Ed

I think everyone agrees that there is more that can be done regarding safety and railroad crossings. I also think that most wouldn't mind having a constructive discussion about what has been done in the past, present and what can be done in the future to improve the safety of railroad crossings. That is how things like Operation Lifesaver and many other programs get started.

However I feel that missouri has crossed the line when he continuously accuses the railroads and it's employess of being murderers, having no concern for public safety, falsification of official reports, tampering with accident scenes, conspiracies, payoffs/bribes to government officials, and so on. The fact is that he has been very disruptive to the members of the community who frequent the Railroading forum. Some members have become less active and/or have stopped visiting the forums because of missouri's actions.

I think you said it best (but in reverse order) of the point I wanted to make.

It's one thing to post something that no one else agrees with. We're not going to ban someone due to a difference of opinion or for complaints made about the website, our magazines, books, videos, etc.

There is a point though where it goes from being merely a difference of opinions, criticism, or a friendly argument to being disruptive and doing "nothing more than cause problems and start fights".

That was partially the intention of this thread.

Personally, I'm comfortable with the idea, at least until Mon if I've proved to have been overzealous in my actions. [;)]

To: DAVID VOSS: You are right in putting missouri on hold temporarily. He needs dicipline.

To ED: If you post something unpoplular 1 time that's not grounds for time out. Missouri has been excessivly obnoxious and persistant on 1 issue constantly using slanderous, seditious, and inflamatory remarks. Everything DAVID VOSS stated was correct. That was reasonably grounds for a "time out."

I said somewhere before to just ignore him and let his topic remain at "0" replies and drop to the bottom. Those 10 pages in his topics I've noticed are just people mostly talking to each other instead of talking to him.

But, I'd rather have adminstrators take the final actions, if necessary. I don't want to get into a "vote people off" situation like on "reality tv" because next thing you know we'll be voting people off left and right.

Now, I've said it before and I'll say it again, that "missouri" can pack more words into the least ideas of anyone I know.

Believe another member said it earlier, but this is a forum where we can get together and exchange thoughts and ideas, etc. We don't always have to agree with each other, and there will always be the guy who thinks Alco's are the greatest diesels ever built. nothing wrong with that, and at the end let's still be railfans, railroaders.modelers, and friends.

Dave

I, too, have had my fill of Missouri, or Mr. Pine, as Ed called him. There are people whose mission in life is to throw grenades and yank chains simply to get a hornets nest stirred up, and then walk away laughing about those stupid jerks that can't see what's going on. It is sad to say, but I think Missouri is one of them. I have to deal with people of his attitude and actions 8 hours a day. That is 8 hours too many and I don't need it here.

I have said, and others have also, if we ignore him, he will go away. When he initiates a thred, don't visit and don't answer. If he tries to disrupt an ongoing thread, ignore him. Unfortunately, while the rest of us wait for him to go away, a lot of the folks we would like to talk with will go away first - and not come back.

I have been with the web site since 2001 and declined to participate, in part, for the Missouri types that seem to infest these forums elsewhere. it's not the disagreements of opinion, it's how he handles it. Another participant on these forums had been on a jury about a crossing accident, and got all worked up about "the evil railroads". He could have put himself in Missouri's current position, but he did not. He acknowledged others valid opinions and the realities of the "real situations". He did not change his mind. He did not become obnoxious and, I believe, still is a valuable contributor to our discussions here.

Since you are asking for suggestions, here is mine. Keep him off, say, the rest of July. Then, let him post, and if you can, monitor his posts prior to them actually getting on the site. That way, if he still is being a bad boy, we are free of his actions. If you can't monitor first, than monitor afterwords, and if he has not shaped up, than a permanent boot. No questions asked, no notice given.

I do not wi***o have anyone banned from these forums, but when we have a disease, we do things that rid our bodies of that disease. Missouri is a disease.

Dave, you are right up there on my good guy list.
