Favorite fallen flag: Seaboard Air Line. It was the closest railroad to where I grew up, and ran behind my wife's parent's house in Tallahassee, FL. Favorite active railroad: Kansas City Southern. Lived near it in Arkansas, and enjoyed the times I got to see it in action.

It ain't dead, good buddy, just reborn -- labour troubles almost killed it, but the State of Vermont took over and it's now the Green Mountain Railway, and a very good outfit it is, too.

You have to have two -- New England Central (which was the Central Vermont) -- I'm biased, did some work for them, but you've got to like the way they operate. And then, for the big fellas, Canadian National. Talk about picking yourself up by your bootstraps -- and so much innovation and good work in operations!

I'd have to go with Norfolk and Western Railway. They had so pretty powerful successful locomotives. I've always admired their J- Class 4-8-4s. They were some of the best locomotives ever produced. Thier coal route was one of the best in world ( former Virginian mainline).
