country music, freight trains, and a question...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, July 7, 2003 5:41 PM
if you like country music and railroading, i would like to suggest an all time favorite album: HANK SNOW "railroad man"...any other fans on this board? also: johnny horton, boxcar willie, and merle haggard are other faves that have been known to make a number of freight references...

the question is if anyone knows who sang the old country song "long black train"?

Noah Hunt and Jason Dennie, Allison Moorer and Doyle Primm, Conway Twitty sang "Long Black Train" according to a quick internet search. Never heard of the song myself so I don't know who wrote it. I looked at the lyrics at http://www.rockabilly.nl/lyrics2/l0049.htm and it looks similar to "Orange Blossum Special" and the other two lyrics are each completely different (http://www.noahhunt.org/songlyrics.html, http://worldlyric.com/a/allisonmoorer/long_black_train.html)
I'm also sure there's a good chance Johnny Cash probably sang that song, too, but as to which version I would not know.

There's also the song "Big Black Train" done by Flatt & Scruggs. I like almost every song about trains from the old folk songs like "Casey Jones" and "Wreck of Old 97" to modern ones like "Engine #9" by Roger Miller or "Steel Rails" by Allison Krauss, however, my favorite song of all time is "City of New Orleans" done by Steve Goodman.

I just did an internet search on the term "railways and music" and the first two listings were a couple of UK web sites.
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/library/musrail.htm
http://www.musicweb.uk.net/railways_in_music.htm
These include anecdotes and listings of lots of music of all sorts (including country and western) with some kind of railway connection some going back to the 1820s. Hope everybody has lots of time to check them out.

On good one is "THE L&N DON'T STOP HERE ANYMORE", by The New Coon Creek Girls. It's a bluegrass song about Hazard Ky and the coal mines.

How about "Hobo's Meditation", by 'Trio' (Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris) ? The song was written by the three singers and copyrighted by Warner Bros. in 1987.
How about 'The Wayward Wind' sung by Gogi Grant?
A bad day engaging in trainwatching (or in mobile law enforcement radio communication eavesdropping) is better than a good day at work! <;)

Another artist whose music has always set the scene for me is John Denver. With Country Roads..Thank God I'm A Country Boy.. Rocky Mount High...Back Home Again... He also has a CD out called " All Aboard" filled with all the above favorites...Just gives you that small town feeling as does Freight Trains as they hammer down the line!!

Haven't heard " long black train" . Here are some more train
songs by country artists. Johnny Cash recorded Hey Porter, Folsum Prison Blues, Rock Island Line ,Orange Blossom Special, City of New Orleans.
Restless Heart had Ride the Hummingbird. Roy Acuff recorded Tennessee
Central #9 and the Wabash Cannonball. Here's a group from East Tennessee
with a couple of train songs. Check out Pine Mountain Railroad and their
album Knoxville Train. Cool bluegrass. Wille Nelson did a cool renditition of the City of New Orleans too.

Hey, I was just searching for that song you're looking for. I don't know if it's the same one, but I heard a song like that yesterday while I was driving back to school. Here's the url:

http://www.circularmoney.com/joshturnerlongblacktrainlyrics.html

I don't know if this is the one you're talking about, but it's worth a try!

Good luck! [:)]
