what are your thoughts on...

i have been noticing an overwhelming amount of spraypaint art on railcars these days. some seem to be mere chicken scratch and some appear to be elaborate designs with full color. one thing i find odd is some of the "better looking" work, the "artists" have gone intentionally around reporting marks and safety info. does anyone know anything about this? are the yardworkers becoming more tolerant? this has plauged my mind for years, and i apologize if this has been covered on this forum before but i am new. thanks!!!

It's true that vandalism is vandalism but some of the graffity is stunning.
If only the "artisists" would use canvas. I'd buy some of it.
I don't suppose there is much a RR could do about the Graffitied cars. There are so many it would cost an arm and a leg to repaint all of them.

caught one once, the reason they dont paint over the reporting marks is because if they do, the car gets shopped, and their artwork is painted over, they have learned if the reporting marks are left alone, the car stays in service, so their art is seen longer. And I agree, if they painted on just about anything else, I would be inclined to buy some of the work, I like poster art. But, they are painting on private property, no matter how good the work is, its wrong. You wouldnt want someone to paint one of these murals on your house without permission.

I've seen a lot of cars where the reporting marks got graffitied over. Some in service that way; others with just the reporting marks and a small rectangle around them repainted, and a couple with the reporting marks spray painted back on freehand.
