Utah Railroad is in fact where they went.

They haul coal. They're in the mountains. They can use the power.

You're right about that! Of course, you probably wouldn't see them all at once.

They're UTAH numbers 5001-5006. Besides those units, Utah has 10 GP38s, two GP40s, and five SD50s, according to the 2003 edition of the DPA-LTA roster book.

If I remember right, those MK units replaced about a dozen SD40-2s.

Yes. They dieselized with a fleet of six-axle Alco 1600-hp road switchers, which were later supplemented by some ex-ATSF "Alligators" and some nee-C&O RSD12s.

Check these out:
http://www.utahrails.net/utah-ry/utah-ry-index.htm
http://www.gwrr.com/default.cfm?action=rail§ion=3B15a

The first site will give you, among other things, a detailed all-time diesel roster.
The second site is on the parent company's official web site.
