Pandering To Spam
Posted by ironhorseman on Saturday, July 5, 2003 3:03 PM
Dear Everybody,

We all know what has been going on here the last few months. A couple of people have been posting either irrelevant or obnoxious topics of discussion. If you are someone who has just joined the forum, the topic has been about grade crossing accidents and how this person believes it isn't an accident that people are killed at crossings, that it's some kind of conspiracy of railroaders to kill in cold blood. That was the obnoxious one.

The other person has some kind of countdown going on set to 7AM Monday July 7th. That's the irrelevant (and also obnoxious) one. He's also a hypocrite because this is just the thing he complained to the system administrators about.

WHY are they doing this? They are attention starved. "LOOK AT ME! PAY ATTENTION TO ME!" That's the simple explanation. It probably runs deeper, but I'm not going to get into that.

WHAT do we do about it? I offer this simple suggestion: instead of pandering to their little games, just ignore them. DO NOT reply. Replying will, for one, only encourage them to do more and, two, the more responses the longer that topic stays on top. If it remains at ZERO replies then it will drop to the bottom of the discussion list and be forgotten and these annoyers will go some where else for attention.

When someone posts a topic multiple, multiple times that qualifies as SPAM. Users missouri/mike have spamed this forum with lengthy letters only about grade crossings. User cabforward has spamed this forum with a countdown. Neither of these people have responded to inquiries on those topics. It used to be you could read topics here that dated 6-8 months ago, but now the oldest post is barley a month old. It is because of all this SPAM.

This letter is only a suggestion. Take it for what it's worth. The best thing to do when someone is making a fool of themselves is NOT to argue with them, but just stand back out the way and let them do it to themselves.

Sincerely

ironhorseman

Ed, I am sure you meant no harm with your statement, only meaning it to be funny, however colonostimy is no funny procedure!
