Trains.com On-Line Community

The discussion regarding building a "family" of users is something I once posted in the "surveys" section of this site. I think the "This topic is NOT for Cowards..." thread demonstrates the desire for users to be able to contact each other.

I have seen it work on other sites where registered users can release what ever information they want to other users, hiding their last name and Jenny and I prefer, or being able to list name, address, etc. as the user desires. Some even allow for a screen name or alias to be used.

I think most of us would like to find other people in the same profession, or with the same interests (N-scale modeling, railfanning, etc.)

Other sites have the functionality so that users can email each other "blind" so that messages can be sent off-line (from the forums), yet not give up anyone's email address. Is this something you all would like to see on Trains.com?

Is that something Trains.com would consider for the future (time for staff to weigh in)?

I like the idea also. Especially the bit about being able to contact others. Many contributors to these forums sound like nice people I'd like to meet, but some I would not trust half as far as I'd like to throw them.

Amen...but will they consider it? (i.e. what do they gain in a monetary or "good will" sense.???)

Joe - Oh Darlin', If I give you my e-mail, then all these here young men will want to write to me!
Then I gotta get pitchures took and spend all my forum time signin' autographs and puttin' lip prints on all them pitchurs!

I have a HOTmail - got the hot? address, but it uses my last name and don't want to post it. And since I only forum here at work, I can't use that one either, since it too has my last name. So either one of two things. You can give me an e-mail address and I will write to you or maybe my friend Ed in Houston would be kind enough to help me out and let me use his e-mail.

Now don't y'all flood us with requests for pichurs and love notes! I just gotta have some time for the forum you know!

Jen

Now there is a novel idea.
Instead of out front, in their face?

Exactly my point. Wouldn't it be nice if Jenny can receive emails from Joe without listing an email address to the public? Then be able to block Joe's emails if he become inappropriate, all while maintaining anonymity?

Until the come up with web browsers with spell check for dialog boxes, no. Another post described the copy-paste method from a word processor, if you are concerned about that.

We're still waiting to see if Trains.com likes this idea. I think this is well within the scope of this site. They have most of the infrastructure there since we have to register to use the site already. Hope they go for it.

Jenny, set your self up another "disposeable"
e-mail address on hotmail or yahoo, dont use your
name, if things get bad or go wrong just quit
using it, let it go dead from inactivity.

I thought about that, but I have e-mail here at work and also a hotmail acct. I don't have it at the house, because there isn't enough time in the day to cover all the goodies. I have to work in-between. For instance - we had Thursday thru Sunday off and I have been in here (at work) twice during that time to catch up on the forum. I read all of it and spend about 2 hours each time doing so. There is just so much information out there and I need time to digest it and go look up things I read about.

Okay, now this is much closer to what I was looking for! Still cannot search people by interest or location, but at least can contact each other off-line if we so choose.
