Helllo, is anyone building new or rebuilding old industrial track or spurs in the USA. I've seen little or no activity here in the Mideastern states. Ben

The Reading and Northern in PA has been busy building lots of new track and reopening lines closed by class ones, some of the lines were closed ten plus years. They are also busy adding track to the yard in Mountaintop , PA. I know the shortline in Scranton & Pocono's, PA has reopened lots of track and built many spurs to serve new customers, NS, CSX, and CP all have double track projects going on in PA , NJ , NY.
The Surface Tansportation Board last year received more new constuction petitions than anytime in recent history.
Other projects, The DME in South Dakota wants to build 284 miles of new track, BNSF 20 miles in Houston, Texas. States of New Jersey reopening track in North Jersey Staten Island to serve a container terminal. There's a major project in Montana 80+ miles. Nevada 20+ miles to the Yucca depository. Eat Broad Top, Mount Union Railroad in Pa 4 1/2 miles is being constucted/reopened, Texas a new line to serve a Toyota plant. Most new freight constuction is off shortlines, since they are growing their business around 7 times faster than class ones. Another thing that has encouraged new rail spurs is the trucking industries shortage of drivers and rising liability insurance costs. Making rail more attractive for many commodities. Class one service has also improved since the disaterous mergers of the 90's. So some companies have shifted more traffic back to rail again.

Designed or laid out 6 industry tracks on four railroads (2 Class 1's) in 5 states as far east as Illinois. Industry tracks are subject to the economy, the perceived fuel crisis'/cost of fuel, regulatory pressure and rates. It's slow now, but nothing says it will be that way two weeks from now. Nature of the beast. (Highway construction has slowed down for some of the same reasons. Now if the truckers wouldn't mind paying for the proportion of the damage they do, maybe things would be a little busier......)

Another thing that may help in the future is the public's growing impatience with truck traffic through their communities, in Vermont Omnya corporation is having a new railroad built to replace truck traffic through some of the towns. They had been getting lots of complaints from citizens about their constant parade of trucks. So this will be a win win situation for everyone, except the truckers.
