Birch cars
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, June 3, 2003 11:28 PM
I heard that the wood used in the construction of the turn-of-the-century train cars were of Birch.
I have my doubts though - can anyone confirm this?

In what part of the car? For a frame and center sill, ash would most likly be the wood of choice, very tight grained and dense, fairly rot resistent, as strong as oak, if not more so. Early automobile frames were made from ash. Birch is a soft wood, and would work as a interior finish, for panels and ceilings, but it would have been very expensive to build a entire car out of it, even then.
