The last time I saw the turn it did not seem that tight at all to me. Also, not only are there the grain trains, but now that NS runs, probably more trains than the IC including hot shot auto trains, on the Gilman split, that was probably the impetus for fixing it.

I just looked at the Terra Server shot of Gilman, Il and the topo map and am confused.

The photo (1998) and map (1990) show the leg of the Y coming from the St. Louis line to the south as being on the south side of the TPW line. I was under the impression that the leg crossed the TPW west of the depot and then made a very tight turn to the south to join the mainline.

Am I dreaming that? or was there a change made to accomodate the southbound grain trains. I can only imagine if the old Y was in affect the sound of the wheels making the tight turn.
