another question mr webmaster
Posted by JoeKoh on Thursday, May 29, 2003 4:30 PM
dear sir or maam
with the new forum overhaul would it be possible when you log on to your site to eliminate junk responses.(eliminate spam).2 individuals have brought up some subjects of debate but then they end up picking fights with other users.i am for free speech in our american society however when they infringe others rights to enjoy the site(muddle through their garbage)that takes away from others.WE understand that crossings are a problem everywhere in this i got to get from a-b to stand in line for a sale at wal-mart world.but the point is and will ever be

i thank you for your time and awit your response

mr joe,

couple of things to assist you in your search for nirvana..

everyone is responsible for their own behavior, and temper..

there is no forum policy against having an unpopular opinion..

noone is responsible for the reactions of another person.. if someone says something that upsets you, that is your problem, not theirs..

noone can force another person to become angry.. each of us get that way on our own..

your 'spam' filter is built inside of you.. anytime you see something that displeases you, avoid it.. one man's spam is another man's sirloin..

stay on track..

Hi Kev,
Remember the BBQ train? You still on board?
Dont know if Canada has a constitution shaped like ours, but one of the most prized rights we Americans have is the right to free speech. But we also have the right to ignore the words of others who express a viewpoint we dont like or agree with.
The very same law that allows you, me and Casey J to post our thoughts and comments here also protects the two people who seem to want nothing more than to fight.
Like I said, the best way to really PO a bully is to ignore him.
Besides, havent they both proven to you that they have less knowledge about railroads and how they work than even a "new" conductor?
Stop the train in protest...you guys ignore the stop signs, (what stop signs, havent seen a stop sign for a train yet), dont these ludicrous statements show you how far out of touch with reality they are?
And the whole point of free speech is the concept that all people, regardless of race, creed, color, religion or nationality have the inheirent right to speak their piece.
Ok, these two have done so. Now, ignore them.
Besides, didnt you mother teach you not to pick on the handicapped?
And arn't you the conductor on the BBQ train deal?
Stay Frosty, stay real frosty...
Ed

to contributors of this topic,

i just want to be clear about your replies to myself or mr joe, as i'm not certain who you were commenting to in your text..

i did not comment on what someone should/should not say in the forum.. this was about handling what mr joe, or anyone, reads in the forum..

mr joe spoke of anger, of 'spam', and generally what displeased him.. i offered suggestions on how to cope with aspects of the forum that negated his enjoyment..
i said nothing about what people should avoid expressing in the forum, only about reading what others have said..

it is all too apparent that asking some contributors to elevate their mentality above the dumpster division is pointless, and asking others to stop writing things that anger readers is too close to twisting the first amendment..

the only solution left is to read everything that interests you on the forum.. when you see something that 'gets your dander up', back off, turn around and go another way..

dont waste time giving them a piece of your mind, they wouldn't know what to do with it.. i have replied to some of these rejects for the tv show 'when idiots attack'.. but i used humor to trivialize the issues they write about.. there are examples available to read..

if you must reply to a nut-case, don't take the bait, tell a joke.. it doesn't have to relate to the subject or the contributor, just write something you've read or heard somewhere.. tell it as if you were posting an original topic.. don't acknowledge that you are replying to a post which is outrageous, stupid, whatever..

if i read a post that says, 'engineers are a joke , they sit on their a** all day and do nothing', i might reply with a joke: 'hey, how can you tell an elephant's been looking thru your refrigerator? his footprints are in the pizza..'

this defuses the contributor by letting him know his post is out-of-bounds and he is being ignored in the content of his message.. it also helps the person replying let off steam by saying something, even if it isn't what he was thinking, and that's a good thing..

most important, it raises the image of the forum by keeping the level of discussion to a civil tone..
and maybe we will pick up some jokes to tell at work, ha-ha!

think about it.. what if everytime you read a post that upset you, there was a reply underneath that told a funny, corny, or even a joke you've heard a hundred times? how would you feel? myself, the thing that's most on my mind is always the last thing i heard or read.. if read a post that angers me, of course i want to tell that moron of his offenses against common sense.. but, if i read a reply like, 'why do hummingbirds hum? because they can't remember the words!' i immediately forget what angered me and continue with reading another topic..

i've heard the hummingbird joke a million times, but reading it on a r.r. forum would take me by surprise.. i would also undersand that a contrubutor with a cool head was keeping things on the forum at a sociable level by throwing a joke on the table to steal the thunder from the nut-case writer, and distracting everyone from sending would-be angry replies by contributing something funny, silly, whatever..

try it five times, if you'd rather vent your spleen than tickle someone else's funny bone, you can always go back..

* * *
'common sense is like quiet in a thunderstorm, it is rare, but always appreciated..

Cab - I agree with your first posting and now for your 2nd one - we have done politics, religion and now jokes. I think I will stick around for the rest of the fun! Can't wait to see what this group brings up next!

BBQ should have a good chocolate cake with chocolate frosting - anyone out there bake?

Not I said the little red hen!

Kev,

The "Freedom of Speech" coin has another side, could be labeled "Freedom to NOT listen".
Just pretend it is junk mail, straight into the trasher where it belongs.

Jen, I don't bake, but am a serious consumer of 'Devil's Food' chocolate cake. My Mom said it was a fitting choice for me.

As I recall the only foul mouthed, threatning posts came from the professionals themselves. We have been nothing but friendly, maybe a little bit controversial. Then again NEEDLESS AND PREVENTABLE deaths have always been a little controversial. I suppose we all get a little pain in our hearts to think of one of our own ATTEMPTING to cross a grade crossing safely only to be run over by a million pound train coming out of nowhere, being operated by the likes of these folks, who say "its all your fault".

why do elephants shoot water out of their trunks?

because if they shot it out of their tails, it would be very difficult to aim..

wELL WELL, mike is back

Mike tell me if these rumors are untrue.. i think you'll find this evidence hard to disagree with

i have a lot of sources,, and sources tell me this is the THEIRD.. railway forum you've been too. one of my "insiders" tells me everyone knows you at railroadforums.com and you created a rucus over there, you also did that at another place.. and have moved on to here..

all of them told me that you said mindless garbage all over the place and that you never believed in anyhting you were saying. is that true? you keep moving from forum to forum.. disturbing people?

busted.
