NYCT Union goes on strike

TWU workers begin walkout at NYCT
Today at 3 a.m., Transport Workers Union members launched a strike at MTA New York City Transit (NYCT), shutting down the agency’s subway and bus systems.

NYCT officials believe the strike is illegal because the New York Supreme Court last week issued two preliminary injunctions against the international union and Local 100 to prevent workers from “conducting, engaging or participating in, through any manner or any means a strike, work stoppage, sick-out, slowdown, or any other concerted activity with the intent of interrupting the normal and regular operations of the New York City Transit Authority and the Manhattan and Bronx Surface Operating Authority,” according to the decision.

NYCT officials are trying to implement the agency’s contingency plan by tomorrow morning’s rush hour. The plan calls for adding State Island Railway weekday rush hour service, and reconfiguring MTA Long Island Rail Road and MTA Metro-North Railroad service to ease crowding and provide shuttles.
