Note the news item on Norfolk Southern's traveling car display, with hands on locomotive simulator time for the general public . So stop calling those people ***. They are now showing they have their heads screwed on right! Steam is great but it isn't everything, and this traveling car display will do the industry a great service. Dave

Hi Everyone,

Let me fill you all in 2816 is on a charter tour "The trans-Canadian steam express." A group of about thirty or so people (mostly British) are dishing out 30 000$ a piece to ride this train one way from Vancover to Montreal. it leaves Vancover tomorow, the 12 of may and is doing one subdivision a day (a full itenerary is at www.cprtours.com/steamtrain/itenerary.htm ) after that it is going via. Chicago to Miniapolis to double head withe the milw. steamer (can't remember the #) down and up the mississippi.

P.S. the trans canadian trip is special 'cause it will be pulling the royal canadian (fully restored 1930s era heavy weights) and wont be pulling that stupid bright red boxcar.

P.P.S My railfan buddies and I are Chasing it From Winnipeg to Thunder Bay
on may long weekend and hopefully I'll get some shots worth posting. [8)]

I for one would love to see a CPR Northern to run! 3101 is sitting at IPSCO (a steel smealting plant) in Regina. IPSCO has some sort of a waterslide and I believe failed at an attempt to have some kind of a zoo because they've got a few elk and buffalo behind a fence. The 3101 is actually not even situated at the sight of the parking lot for the watersilde (where people would see it), but rather right near some building used by workers (you can still drive up to see it though). It's displayed behind a fence with a passenger car and caboose that are in serious need of a new paint job. The passenger car doesn't even have a correct paint scheme. The 3101 is in better shape, but still could use a lot of work done to it! I think this engine would be excellent candidate for CP to restore to operating condition.

For CN, I'd love to see Northern 6043 run. It's currently displayed at a park in Winnipeg and does need work done (the outer covering for 6043's boiler is gone!). This is a very historical engine as it pulled the last shceduled steam run train in Canada, from The Pas to Winnipeg, on April 25th, 1960. There are many other engines I could mention too. Hopefully, both CP and CN will have the sense to get more steam engines running for the future!

But talking of the OC, they've got 2 CPR G5's, one in excellent condition, maybe CPR would buy them?

Her Majesty sounded great as well. I was one of the fortunate few that got to ride Canadian Pacific's passenger cars for the ride to Guelph Junction. With open vestibules, I was able to get some great video of her working to & from Union Station.

Since Ohio Central has dropped the fires on steam, I think it only fitting that CN picks up the torch, and out does CP with the GTW 6325. Somebody please rescue this loco from another retirement....

Yes, I did get up to Canada and see the "Empress" . Her Majesty looked very nice. The care that is given to that locomotive is second to none. They stop about every 60 miles for inspection and lubrication. One morning before the train left Dryden, Ontario the crew was tounching up the paint on the nose of the boiler. I also hope that CP will continue this tradition.

Hi Keith,

I just noticed this forum posting today. I sure hope you got a chance to see the 2816.

On June 14, the Empress train stopped at a town about 30 minutes from my place. I loaded my kids in the car and got down there. I took pictures of the kids sitting on the loco pilot, only later to find I was shooting with an empty camera! What a ninny! Anyway the train headed out when we were still there and we had a vantage point only about 20 ft from the tracks! I can still see those 75" drivers going around!

Let's hope CP does an encore of this trip sometime soon, a definite treat for steam fans on both sides of the border!

Actually I will be leaving in 9 days (and counting). I hope to see the train from Thunder Bay to Kenora, Ont on its western return trip. I am really looking forward to seeing it.

Typically, 2816's consist has been the loco, tender, auxiliary tender (I believe from a D&H 2-6-6-2)GP30 in heritage paint (just in case), 3-4 baggage cars hosting a museum of sorts, and a few heavy weight cars. A nice short train so she can do 60mph without to much wear and tear. For the most part the GP30 is in neutral, just there for emergencies or an extra puch up a hill.

I sure hope you were able to get up here!
The train is spectacular!
It pulled into Toronto's Union station on saturday night......WOW!!! It was REALLY loud. VERY COOL. I believe that it is running throughout ontario through the assisstance of GOtransit as there were serveral GOtrain cars attached to it and it was coming from Guelph, (the GOtrains don't presently go to Guelph).
If you haven't made it yet, good luck, and you should!

The CPR trains passed my town last Sunday eastbound. It had a baggage car, boxcar, and three passenger cars. Just had time to take a couple of pictures and it was gone!!

Greetings,

I was wondering if one of our northern neighbors might be able help me out. I have heard rumblings that the CP Royal Husdon #2816 is running through Canada in May, June and July. I did find a schedule on the CP webpage. Just wondering if anyone knows what the consist of the train is. Also if there is a more detailed schedule with more times. Thanks in advance
