Ok first of all, why would you hate a design if you haven't even actually gotten to appreciate it, eh?

Say if you're the railfan, wouldn't you appreciate a design that's been carefully crafted to help employees running the locomotive?

I mean granted this unit ain't some E-unit ( I like E-units) or an F59PHI ( like those too), but this is a freight unit that was designed for freight, designed with employee safety in mind ... don't ya think that eventually these units may become slug moms in the future?

If you're the conductor or the engineer, won't you like a viewing space to see your crew member?

AND yes I do like the SD70ACe for what it is ...

Matt
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

I believe that is one of the reasons for the design, but the main reasons were for the ergonomics in the cab and for the view of crewmembers riding on the front steps. Anotherwords, for comfort and safety.

Straying a bit off the specifics of the topic, I had someone swear to me that he saw new SD90MAC-H's come through Butler on the UP in April or May of this year. I was pretty sure that there weren't any new 90's being made, but he was sure that they were big MACs. The newest SD70ACes sure do look like those 90MACs though!

Those noses certainly are...different. Why are those there like that anyway? Is it so the crew can get in and out without havint to duck (as far)?

I like them because they are still trains. The SD70ACe cabs are more similar to the last SD90MAC's. The SD70M's had a less weird modified version of the standard cab that looked similar to the SD90's cab. Then they went back to the modified SD90 style cab for the SD70ACe/SD70M-2's.

Actually some 90MAC's had that version but none of the SD70M's have that cab. Some UP's and NS's have a in-between version.
