CN changed standard gauge trucks to narrow gauge trucks on regular standard gauge cars. Did any foriegn cars like non CN cars ever transfer this way to get on the Newfy 42" gauge railway? Were the CN cars in captiv service for this?

I don't think they did.
On a similar topic, before Newfoundland lost its railway, CN tried increasing intermodal traffic to eliminate the gauge change and make the line more efficient. It didn't work.
