Does anyone know the current numbers of these units? I have seen photos of #3897 and of numbers over 5100.

David,

The current road numbers are 4000-4999. That was the first order that UP placed. Then witht the 70M's that UP acquired from the SP merger were placed 3975-3999. I do know what you are talking about when you said about units in the higher numbers. I do know that they placed another order of 150, and those would be numbered intothe 5000's. This is what you probably saw. The other day I seen a fresh brand new set of 3 come through town and they were numbered 3817-3819. This has really had me confusedso they must have another order for more. They must have placed anotherorder for more. So I will do some morechecking and see what I can do for you. I have a buddy who is an engineer here through town so I will give him a call and see if he knows. He might go ahead andreply toyou because he does comeon here and talk. Well I hope that this helpsa little bit. Talk to ya later,

From diesel_locomotives@yahoogroups.com the UP SD70Ms built in 2000-2002 were UP 4000-5126. A previous order by SP is/has been renumbered to UP 3974-3984; 3986-3999. The number 3985 was skipped for the challenger that UP owns. The current 2003 order is for SD70Ms 3874-3973. This would total out to 1252 unts.

If Dru saw 3817-3819 the other day, that is a new order. Will check my sources.

Thanks for the info. I had not heard of any 2003 order. Does anyone know where these are built?

Dear Ed,

I didn't know that UP had skipped 3985 because of the Challenger. Thanks for letting me know that. When I saw those 3 new units, they were flying by at 70 mph and they were already getting through by the time that I got outside. But I know those are the numbers that I saw. They were brand new, running elephant style, and they were going westbound. These had to have been on their first revenue run. Let me know if I am wrong.

One other thing, UP has 2 more SD70M's that are nowhere near the regular unit assignments. These are UP 2000 and 2001 or its 2001-2002. These are the units that pulled the Olympic torch around the country. UP has not renumbered them yet. I think they have been repainted back to UP colors but the numbers are still the same.

UP 2001 and 2002 have numbers reserved for them somewhere in the 4000 series; I'm not sure exactly where.

I'm pretty sure the units you saw must have been 3917-3919; the timing would be about right. Nothing numbered below 3874 has been ordered...yet!

As far as I know, all 100 of the latest units (3874-3973) are being built at London. This IS their 2003 order--some were built in '02, but none were delivered before January, for that reason.

So, 1252 is the correct quantity for now.

OK you are probably right. Like I said they went by at speed and they were already going through by the time I got out there so it was probably them numbers instead. Thanks for correcting me and letting us know what the current order is.

Check out www.ole.net/~rcraig/UP.HTML for a nice roster. It even shows what the SD70M Olympic engines (2001-2002) will be renumbered to.

I saw one of these at Duplaineville, WI several weeks ago. It had an angled SD 45 type radiator. Do all of these have this feature? I assume that they need it because of the added horsepower.
What did these locos cost UP?

Thanks,

No, only the newer ones have the flared radiators (I think that would be somewhere in the 4700s that they started, so it would be from that undetermined starting point through 5126, and anything numbered below 4000, that has the flared radiatrors.

There are supposed to be 175 more SD70Ms coming this year; that should take care of the 3700s and lower 3800s.

3699-3873 (including Dru's 3817-3819 sighting)
Recent order of 175 units. I believe some will eventually be delivered designated SD70M-2 with teir 2 emmissions and SD70ACe carbody inc phase 2 cab. Numbering may change as deliveries occur. Its all very confusing.

3874-3973
part of 2nd order with 5000-5126.

3974-3984 & 3986-3999
ex SP units.

4000-4999
1st order (4690+4691 renumbered 2000+2001)

5000-5126 (part of 2nd order)

Did I miss anything?

Just to add to my post, I've done some more digging and it appears that the 3873 down to 3699 order has not started delivery yet and all will be SD70M-2's with the SD70ACe body as stated above.

Dru's sighting must have been 3917-3919 unless they had the new body style and you didn't pay much attention at the time. Like I said, I don't believe the order has started yet. 3874 is still the lowest numbered SD70M in UP colours.

Does anyone know what these units cost? Or the cost of an AC6000 or MAC6000?

Thanks,

Jim

UP 2002 is still in the Olympic colors. It turned up at Landers Yard on NS (ex-WAB) about a week ago.
