GP 38-2 vs. GP50

Are the GP38-2 and the GP50 identical externally?
I'm wondering since I have two athearn models that look the same, and one was labeled as a GP50

Maybe someone at the hobby shop stuck a GP50 in the GP38 box.

...After reading your question I clicked over to Google and brought up photos of both engines and they sure do look very similar. If you care to see some photos of them just type in the discription of the models you have in question and take a look.

The boxes must have been switched. The GP-38 looks nothing like the GP-50.The only similarity would be the general shape of the unit, and similar length. The fans and grilles are the main spotting feature. Of course the internal components are TOTALLY different.

The Gp-38-2 & the Gp-50 share the same frame, trucks and basically the same car body. The main difference is: The Gp-50 has 3 radiator fans and one turbocharged exaust stack. A Gp-38-2 has twin radiator fans and dual ehaust stacks. (not turbocharged) The radiator grills on the Gp-50 are taller and longer than the gp38-2
