The UP did in fact use a fuel tender with diesels. It looked similar to the SP fuel tender.

On page 50 of the November 1983 Trains it says Amtrak converted E9A 400 into a fuel tender in 1978.

So what was the mechanics that let the tender fuel the locomotives?

Could it fuel both the locomotives if it was placed in between?

When the consist did stop for fuel was only the tender needing refueling? In other words, did the tender always keep the engine tank full?

The tenders from UP's Big Blows are interesting since they were rebuilds of tenders from 800-series 4-8-4's. It probably explains why they look right (except for the yellow and gray paint) as water auxiliaries for 844 and 3985.

They control two attached SD40-2s by radio signals.
That would be just an access door.

I believe everything above the frame is a fuel tank.

That was turned into that radio controlled slug thing.

The modified CSX fuel tender was painted in YN2 colors with "Fuel Tender" actually spelled out on the side. It was semi-permanently attached between a pair of AC44CWs' (#48 & 49 I believe) This didn't last too long due to the fact that if one engine went to the shop for repairs, the other one usually had to tag along as well, taking two units out of service!

For many years now, I've enjoyed the paint scheme on both the Southern Pacific and Burlington Northern fuel tenders.

So did the Union Pacific too. They ran a Coal Train from the PRB all the way to Sioux City and back for awhile than never ran them ever again. And this is way back when the UP took over the CNW Railway. Allan.

CSX had at least one in operation on the 'Seminole Coal Train' that made a daily round trip between Chattachoochee, FL and the Seminole Electric plant outside of Palatka, FL. A daily round trip of nearly 400 miles which without the tender caused the power to be refueled every other day in Jacksonville. With the tender in opeation the refueling became a weekly operation. I understand the fuel transfer problems was the ultimate demise of this operation.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!
