OK so he might be an Einstein, but I doubt it.

That's right, Lotus098, it's a popcorn forum. Tell everyone your favorite flavor, your most hated flavor, maybe a favorite railroad song or two or too, and why you have the feeling everyone is looking sinister to you while railfanning.

Allan calling folks morons and then butchering the spelling of the words in his post is a perfect example of the old saying..."People who live in glass houses should not throw stones".

Copied it from a previous post which is now up to four (4) pages. Four pages about crossing incidents. Almost as interesting as "What railroad do you hate/love the most?" Like some Class 1 railroad has an agenda and was out to get someone.

On a simular matter I can see were some people would drive into the sides of trains at a grade crossing. This mainly happens at crossings were there are no flashing lights, warning bells, or gates. If this were to happen at a crossing that saw lots of traffic (automobiles and trains) and had the flashing lights, ect.... then I would have to question the driver's sences.

A simular incident happens all the time at a certain intercection only 5 mins from my house. It's not railroad related though. It is a three way intercection. two streets cross each other Ivy Hill Rd and Cheltenham Ave. There is a light there. When the light turns green for the people on Ivy Hill Rd, some people attempt to go straight (which isn't an option because there is a cemitary across the street). This cemitary had a cast iron fence around the entire premiter including the intersection area. You wouldn't believe how man accidents we've had at that intersection on such a quite street. The cemitery decided to install a reniforced steel fence at that intercection because of all the accidents. I personally think the townships of Cheltenham and Springfield need to put big only left or right turn signs.

Headline is "Bluffs man drives car into train", so I would surmise that it's about a grade crossing accident where the automobile drove into the side of a train that had already occupied the crossing.

As a matter of interest, this sort of accident is quite common, especially in rural areas without streetlights to clearly show the train. A railcar often occupies the whole field of view illuminated by headlights, so they're suprisingly difficult to detect at night, especially in poor weather - assuming (a) a lapse in attention on the motorist's part at the crossing; and (b) a lack of illuminated crossing protection.

It's common enough, that my understanding is that the FRA is mandating conspicuity striping be applied to the sides of railcars over the next ten years, and to locomotives over the next five years. A short browse of the Transport Canada website didn't turn up anything that explicitly states that they're following suit, but it stands to reason that Canadian equipment would sprout FRA-compliant striping in order to be suitable for interchange.

"Compleat moron" or not, it seems regulators think it's enough of a problem to do something about it...
