Good trivia question! The engine was built in 1881 by the Grant Locomotive Works. It was for the Canada Southern RR. So I am answering 2. Grant.

More power without loss of high speed capabilities? How so? is it a 2-speed? Like two different ratios between the driven axle (top) and the wheels being driven?

The Grant Locomotive Works...in 1881.
{Speaking of weird engines...The Germans had a prototype of a "V-8" configured steam engine in the 1930's...and it ran over 125 mph...}. Two "V" steam cyl's on each side for a total of 8 cyls.

What locomotive company built Eugene Fontaine's unconventional locomotive, designed to have a high pulling power without losing speed? It was a failure however being fast, yet weak.

1. Lima
