Not anytime soon. There are mid-term elections next year, and history tells us that with the political situation as it now is in this country and with the legilative bodies as they are (balance of party membership), the Democrats, who are likely to favor Amtrack, will gain sufficient seats to derail this proposal.

Relax, but be wary dear friends, this is only a trial balloon. The real action is yet to come in the seedy halls of congress. This action will initiate a study by the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) that will require at least six months before they are allowed to let anything out. We all know however, that there will be countless leaks from the CBO, the White House Budget Director's office,( not to mention that all members of the house or any member of the senate that is running for re-election next year [}:)] or for president in 2008) and key committee chairs. We might know somthing definitive in mid 2007. And that may be a stretch, but get your pictures from public areas[;)] and NOT from Amtrak stations, private property(Unless it is yours!),or anywhere in the States of [:(!][:(!][:(!]New Jersey, [:(!]New York,[:(!][:(!][:(!]Illinois, [:(!]Massachusetts, [:(!][:(!][:(!][:(!]Louisiana,Mississippi or [:(!]California!

Northeast Corridor to become Amtrak Subsidiary

In the Boston and Atlanta papers.

http://www.boston.com/news/local/connecticut/articles/2005/10/13/amtrak_board_approves_creating_subsidiary_for_northeast_corridor/

Basically, the unannounced decision of the Amtrak BOD is to create a subsidiary which would own and manage the NEC. Ownership is to be transfered to a state and federal consortium to manage and pay for maintenance of the line. The transfer is to be made on or before the next BOD meeting in January 2006.
