Sulfuric acid will cause chemical burns just like chlorine. It gets really hot when added to water, but it is a liquid so it is not as likely to form a cloud. It does a great job of dissolving metals it comes in contact with.

One could take the tack that if you're not having derailments, you're not moving trains....

Joe's use of the term "residue" is significant. Used to be that once a car was emptied of its hazardous cargo the placards could be removed, even though there was still a bit of the product left in the tank. Today the cars (and highway vehicles, too) still have to be placarded unless the tank has been thoroughly cleaned.

Which means that the big tank car with the hazmat placards might not be a huge bomb after all. Or maybe it is.

New technology to eliminate derailments?

Placement of defect detectors would reduce derailments caused by equipment defects.

Use of new track-maintenance techniques would reduce derailments caused by track defects.

Use of Positive Train Control or other such things would reduce the derailments caused by human defects...sorry, error.

Better grade-crossing protection or grade separation will reduce idiot-driver defects.

But unless and until everything is in place, there are going to be derailments. And all of those measures will only reduce--not eliminate--the possibilities.

Whew! 2005 and derailments are still going strong!

Looks like the industry prediction back in the 1980s that basically expressed that
"With the implementation of NEW TECHNOLOGY train derailments in the 21st Century will become virtually non-existent", was a bit pre-mature.
