No, I won't be in the vicinity, but I can hear the trains coming through Bazaar from where I live. I can hear them on my scanner also.
Matfield Green will be doing their "Railroad Days" again next year, 2006. I went last year for my first visit and came away with a hat and T-shirt.
I also got to meet the owner of the section house and discussed the renovations he is doing. He is currently living in Illinois.

Going under the archway and continuing on around the curve on the gravel road and going where you did does provide a good view of train movements. Looking across the way you will see some equipment and etc. sitting near an elevator-type building. There are a couple of spur sidings I believe and some other things in view.
As you come into town, on the west side of the highway you should see BNSF trucks parked near a small white concrete block building which is their track maintenance HQ. Continuing on north through town and just at the outskirts also on the west side you will see a rather long building made of limestone with a new roof and a lot of renovation done at present. This used to be a section house inhabited by section workers in the earlier days. The section foreman's house used to be just to the south a short distance. Going north from the section house you will see a large cattle loading chute and holding pens. There is a good place to park on the north side of driveway. I wouldn't cross the tracks there to be on the other side. The view is ideal on the east side of the tracks.

Ok, i guess ill be there. So are you guys going? [:p]

I dont know where the "sectionhouse" is. [:(] Is it that brick building thing? Last time i was there, i went under the tracks (on a road) that went towards a house, and then curved to the right (north) and i was on rocks . I think what was there were defect detectors? [:0]

Dan, saw two UP coal drags in Manhattan this morning. There were several empty flats, one had two sets of trucks fastened down, stored in UP siding near K-Mart.
Nothing going under the highway at Alta Vista.
Slow train day for me. [:(]

12? Guess your parents will be driving you to the Flint Hills then?
Come on ahead, the weather forecast is great for railfanning and there could be plenty of traffic to view. A good spot is near the cattle loading chutes just north of the remodeled section house. If the owner of the house is around, he has a great location to watch trains on the west side of the property. [;)]

If you go, don't stand in the middle of the tracks to take pictures, have plenty of ID handy for the RR police and local deputies, don't look suspicious, and watch out for the "lady engineers", not all are friendly.
