Discount Sleeper Tickets in Tucson

I am considering taking Amtrak home, for the fun of it, after my training is done in Phoeinx in October. I have rode Amtrak before and have even had a sleeper. It is a great experience. I have read that it is possible to buy discount sleeper tickets onboard the train, provided there is a room available. The train departs Tucson around 1:00am in the morning. On my trip to Whitefish Montana from Chicago I noticed that there is almost no Amtrak attendent available in the middle of the night. Does anyone know if I will be able to find someone at that late hour of the night to purchase an unused sleeper from? Has anyone tried it before?
