Strange CSX Operations...Anybody Have a Clue?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, August 13, 2005 12:31 PM
The other day while railfanning, I saw a freight train, which looked like it was heading into the yard, so nothing too special. But then came the rear of the train. There were two locomotives on the rear. I didn't happen to catch the front, so I don't know if there were locomotives there as well. So either they were backing the 100-200 car train back into the yard(It was about a mile or two from the yard entrance) or those were on the rear helping. (Assuming there were locomotives on the front.) Do any of you have a clue as to what they were doing?

And if that wasn't strange enough, later I saw a CN locomotive on a CSX intermodal. That's the first CN locomotive that I've seen venture this far southeast.

Seeing that CN locomotive is most certainly strange, in the southeastern parts of the states. I even think it's somewhat strange to see a CN unit anywere up by where I live in the great state of PA. However it's not uncommon over by my area to see some CP action.

I'm going to assume that the two locomotives in the back of your 200 car train consist were most likely helpers. What kind of engines were they, and was this CSX???

I have seen these before but I have seen it on. The Up before it was on the line by my old house the train had stopped and then I saw it start to back up. Now I don't know if it was doing some switching in the MItchell yard over on 35th st or if they had passed up signal but it looked really cool to see a train back up

The reason for seeing a CN engine (correct me if I'm wrong because learning is my reason for being here) might have been CSX bought it and they hadn't re-painted it to a CSX scheme. Just what I thought it could be.

As best as I can remember, it was an SD70MAC and an AC4400CW. Yes, it was CSX.

It could have been, but I doubt it. It was something like an SD75I or some locomotive I doubt CSX will ever even consider buying.

UP backs long trains into yards all the time around here. A couple of times they were long enough that they had to put the train on two tracks.

It's just power sharing that's all, nothing special.

Specifically where in SE, b/c in FL (orlando area) I've seen old BN units and some UP and in one case a C40-9W NS unit. I haven't seen any CN or CP units yet though . . .
"There is nothing in life that compares with running a locomotive at 80-plus mph with the windows open, the traction motors screaming, the air horns fighting the rush of incoming air to make any sound at all, automobiles on adjacent highways trying and failing to catch up with you, and the unmistakable presence of raw power. You ride with fear in the pit of your stomach knowing you do not really have control of this beast." - D.C. Battle [Trains 10/2002 issue, p74.]

I recently saw several Sante Fe Warbonnets in Ashland, Kentucky, a massive CSX switching point. In these days of basically four class 1s nationally, it's interesting to see something new-maybe this should be another thread but it was interesting soon after the NS/CSX buyout of Conrail to see alot of locos and cars marked below the "Conrail/CR" with NYC,PRR,Erie, DLW etc- I guess they went back to the originial/original pre-pre-pre merger to see who owned what to divide it up between CSX and NS
