Ask any old head who worked for the BN and the BNSF. They say they worked for the BN and refer to the BNSF as the BN.
Me personally, I refer to the BNSF as the Burlingtion Great Northern Pacific

BNSF is like a train. B..N..S..F. If they hook up with NS, no changes in the consist will be necessary.

Wi***hey would have one engine in the Warbonnet, one in Chinese Red, and one in Blue Sky for the fans, though.

Ironken,
In the late 1970s and into the 1980s BN hauled a lot of coal and did not profit by it, because management set the rates too low to pay for the investment required. BN's operating ratio in the 1980s and into the 1990s was noticeably higher than Union Pacific's. They kept changing the way they ran things, much like CSX has been doing over the last several years. It seems to me BN had more fights with their employees than other roads. They tried to use their Winona Bridge Company to run Chicago-Seattle trains.Selling (or leasing) the Montana lines to Montana Rail Link was a mistake, and they have tried to buy it back. Closing the SP&S north of Pasco was another mistake.
Since Matt Rose came on board the tables have been reversed. BNSF is better run than Union Pacific. I do not know if BNSF would be in better or worse shape today if he had gone somewhere else. He did not make the big decision to buy all of those SD70MACs, perhaps the best move Burlington Northern ever made.

Why not SFBN? I mean, if they did that first, we would think it sounds OK and it would be programmed into our minds like BNSF is [:I][:p]

Here in northeast Missouri, the old hats still call it the Burlington ... shoulda been around right after the merger with the Frisco. If you wanted to get somebody ticked off in short order, all you had to do was call it the 'Frisco Northern'.

Always enjoyed getting my Santa Fe buddies wound up by reminding them that the first word in railroading (at least in their area) is Burlington!

Burlington John

I was asked if just BN would OK and my reply was absolutely not!!!. Therefore BNSF.

Nanaimo, where do you get your info that the BN was poorly run? The BN had deeper pockets than the Santa Fe at merger time. Matt Rose isn't some great power. He was Kreb's protoge. The SantaFe was skimping on loco maint and road maint as well. The BN is known for slow heave freight and the SantaFe for its pigs. One coal train generated more revenue than one intermodal.

I'm sorry, but I think they were wise with the BNSF name. I mean, the railroad name "SANTA FE" is world famous...it would be very stupid if they left that off. In the same sense, if they left off Burlington Northern, that name would be lost, when a lot of history is behind that name as well...
Long live the BNSF .... AND its paint scheme. SchemerBob

How about American Pacific? They could keep that name if any (yuck) transcontinental mergers come to pass.

Actually, BS (Burlington Santafe) would have been more appropriate on so many levels.

Those other railroads earned their name recognition when people rode their trains. BN only had passenger trains for a year, and they used GN, NP and CB&Q equipment.

Burlington Northern was not that well run. Matt Rose is in charge and he came from Santa Fe. (And before that SP). The Santa Fe name is a lot better known.

Why not direct this to the ivory tower people in Ft. Worth who are the only ones who have the answer to your query? [:o)][:p][:)]
