Yelling
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 25, 2002 10:34 PM
I would like to advise anyone posting or replying on these forums not to yell--using all CAPS. It is harder to read and is considered by most (myself included) to be impolite. Thanks!

What do you mean that, "you would like to advise,"? That sounds like an "or else." Who are you anyway? Are you the moderator? Forum administrator? What kind of mamby pamby crap is this? A person comes to a forum to relax and speak their mind. In this age of political correctness and being careful not to offend anybody it is a wonder that our freedom of speech is still in tact. I would bet that you don't work on the RR. If you did your skin would be a little thicker. When I have gotten yelled at when I am at work, I never would say, "you are being impolite." You know what they would call me, yeah thats right a puss.

You lose that bet, I do work for a railroad, I've served in the military, and have been called every name in the book. A little civility is not too much to ask for on this forum.

I certainly agree that "all CAPS" can be very annoying, but I would rather see someone posting a reply that was based on factual knowlege in all CAPS, than reading a "guestimated" reply in lower case letters. How do you tell who is B.S.ing? well, just use some common sense. I have seen some replys on this "bat-channel" that have made me laugh. You must remember, this is an open forum, so some folks might not be quite as knowlegeable as the rest of us. I, myself was recently corrected by another member, regarding the proper procedure of isolating locomotives. Being the gentleman that I am, I printed a retraction. Remember, we are all brothers of the same fraternity here. We all share a common love of the rails. When you come across a less knowlegable brother, just gently correct him. Use some tact, and try not to offend. This forum is, after all, for the benefit of ALL railfans. We should be a brotherhood, not children fighting.
I would also request that serious users of this forum sign their posts. I always sign mine.
Thanks for my "soap-box time".

I can deal with all-caps. What I cannot deal with are these stream of consciousness, run-on sentences that wear you out before you can discover what the post is all about. I am not asking for literature, just readability.

I personally don't care about grammar. Some people are not very good at grammar, but may be a math whiz and cannot help that their writing skills are poor. What I do care about is somebody "advising," me not to do something that they apparently have no authority over. If somebody were to "ask," me not to do something, I would at all costs try to refrain from doing whatever it is that bothers them. So if I feel the need to yell in all caps, I will do so until I am "asked," to refrain from that practice.
