Train Dispatcher Jobs/Training
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 19, 2002 12:17 AM
Hello,

I am currently an Aircraft Dispatcher for United Airlines and I am a little scared about what the future holds for me there. Its my dream job but am getting ready and prepared for the worst. I know nobody in the train/railroad industry but a train dispatcher is really the only other career besides what I am doing now that interests me, I want to have a passion for what I do and not think of it has a job.
So to the point of this. Where is the best place to learn more about doing this job?? Is there an organization I can call about for information and talk to someone?? Are there Job Fairs around that I could attend and talk to someone that way?? Any help is greatly appreciated and welcomed! Thank you from Illinois!

you will see better advice than mine.. i'm not in railroading.. but, go to the rr's website or america's job bank, a private co. that organizes job openings from every state's job service program.. rrs list dozens of positions, esp. up.. but, you might not much that's new-- the description is the same as for train crews, mow, signal repair, etc. you train for several weeks, graduate, get offered a position, get on the extra board and wait for the phone, or pager, to ring.. six months later, you wonder WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING??

Hey there,
Your best bet is to try the Class 1s web sites, and if you know any officer on a railroad, talk to them. Dont know if you guys are a union craft, but most railroad, all Class 1s are, and seniority is the rule of the day. But it sure cant hurt to get your resume to the Class 1s human resources depts. Ecxceptions are made, and you sound like your not only qualified, but really want the job, so give it a try, the worst they can say is no.

Hello, Like air traffic controllers, train dispatcher positions can be stressful though I'm sure you can handle it. i know for a fact the Union Pacific Railroad dispatchers are non-union and openings are posted on their website fairly often. www.uprr.com - hope this helps and good luck...Teach

Go to bnsf.com under Careers. They just advertised about a month or two ago for DSs. Oh yeah, if you get the job, be nice and don't try running a race when you give a track warrant. I think that most of the jobs were for Ft. Worth TX. I don't believe that Johnson County Comm. College trains DS' any more, but you can give them a call. Call JCCC Overland Park, KS. They may be able to direct you.
