For a field trip in grade school we went down to Union Station and toured the North Coast Limited when it had the Lowey 2 tone geen paint scheme. It became my favorite racetrack passenger train until the Q mixed them all together. NP steam doesn't get as much attention as some other roads, but their Northerns, Challengers, and Yellowstones were really good looking engines IMO. Reply daveklepper Member sinceJune 2002 20,096 posts Posted by daveklepper on Friday, July 15, 2005 4:12 AM AT&SF because of their terrific passenger service and friendly crews. CB&Q a close second for similar reasons and for the Zephyr fleet, really beautiful trains But of all the fallen flags, not limited to those of BNSF, my two favorites are D&RGW and NYNH&H. And for various reasons, I'd have to put the Pennsy and the Central and the Southern and the N&W up with the AT&SF and CB&Q. But there is hardly a railroad that had some passenger service that didn't tug at my heart at one time or another, including the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific. I was only seven when he retired in 1970 but up until he passed away in 1994 there wasn't a day that went by that he enjoyed talking about the Frisco. Lots of stories he related about the good ole SLSF. Does that make CMSP&P eligible ? Dale Reply Anonymous Member sinceApril 2003 305,205 posts Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 15, 2005 12:55 AM i think that BN rates first, GN a close second. BN because I love Cascade Green, grew up in Tacoma, WA where BN has a huge yard GN because of their excellent use of orange on their diesels, and because JJ Hill was a pretty cool guy Reply Edit Anonymous Member sinceApril 2003 305,205 posts Posted by Anonymous on Friday, July 15, 2005 12:37 AM I have BN, and ATSF trains in my model train collection. I realy can't explain why I like the BN. Mabe it had something to do with time era that I was born in. Other than I realy have no clue. Mabe it's the rich history from the Burlington Route. Allan. What is your favorite predecessor road and why? * Great Northern * Northern Pacific * Chicago, Burlington & Quincy * Spokane, Portland & Seattle * Fort Worth & Denver * Colorado & Southern * Frisco (SLSF) * Burlington Northern * ATSF * Some other smaller road I've forgotten (!) My first model train (Tyco) set had Burlington Northern freight cars and a locomotive so I was a BN fan from age 6 onwards. I was also a CB&Q fan even though they were gone by the time I showed up on this Earth. I love the silver F units and the Budd Zephyr cars to this day. I love passenger trains, historic and modern. So when BNSF comprises the railroads that brought us the Empire Builder, North Coast Limited, California Zephyr, and Chiefs, how could the modern railroad not be my favorite?
