A good portion of my high-school railfan years were occupied by both the CB&Q and the Santa Fe. Both are tied as my favorites. Both companies presented themselves to the public as thoroughly professional operations. Definately for the grown-ups. Both roads had a sense of themselves that was purely positive. No fooling around in operations, maintanance, appearance, or public relations. The passenger services of both railroads was beyond reproach. One didn't leave their premier passenger trains feeling as if they were made a fool of. They knew the meaning of the phrase, "Public service."

I guess I have split loyalties -- GN in the Sixties but AT&SF up to the merger with BN.

I like GN's blue color scheme.

....I must revert back to the days of the Pennsylvania RR...{Johnstown, Pa.}...Viewing operations from the station platform{s}....4 tracks east-west...It seemed there was always activity close together...Not unusual to see several trains coming through at the same time...and now thinking back....What happened...How could such a giant behave in such a manner that it now ceases to exist....!

Growing up in Aurora, IL, I was alway partial to the BN. I often went railfanning with my cousin along the Aurora Sub. I'll still never forget how fast the intermodals ran (and still do) on that line. My family has a tradition of going to White Pines State Park every November as well. I still spend most of my time on the Whispering Pines Trail, the Lookout Trail and the Sleepy Hollow Trail when we go every year. [:D]

Historically, even though they operated in the B.C. (Before Chris), the CB&Q is a favorite. I wish I could've seen them.

Apart from BNSF routes, I always had a special place for the C&NW and D&RGW. Both were pretty cool railroads with the friendliest crews I've ever met. And of course, visiting a short line is always a cool experience. The first time I saw the KB&S ALCos, I was hooked!

Santa Fe - for the Warbonnets, and having the faith that "betting the farm" on making money out of intermodal was the right thing to do.

Northern Pacific. For a field trip in grade school we went down to Union Station and toured the North Coast Limited when it had the Lowey 2 tone geen paint scheme. It became my favorite racetrack passenger train until the Q mixed them all together.

NP steam doesn't get as much attention as some other roads, but their Northerns, Challengers, and Yellowstones were really good looking engines IMO.

AT&SF because of their terrific passenger service and friendly crews.
CB&Q a close second for similar reasons and for the Zephyr fleet, really beautiful trains

But of all the fallen flags, not limited to those of BNSF, my two favorites are D&RGW and NYNH&H. And for various reasons, I'd have to put the Pennsy and the Central and the Southern and the N&W up with the AT&SF and CB&Q. But there is hardly a railroad that had some passenger service that didn't tug at my heart at one time or another, including the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific.

Santa Fe followed by Frisco. My Uncle Pete worked for SLSF at Wichita as a brkmn for 35 yrs. I was only seven when he retired in 1970 but up until he passed away in 1994 there wasn't a day that went by that he enjoyed talking about the Frisco. Lots of stories he related about the good ole SLSF.

BNSF now has 980 miles of the former Milwaukee road, and also has 320 miles of track that the Milwaukee had rights on. Does that make CMSP&P eligible ?

i think that BN rates first, GN a close second.

BN because I love Cascade Green, grew up in Tacoma, WA where BN has a huge yard

GN because of their excellent use of orange on their diesels, and because JJ Hill was a pretty cool guy

My favorite would be Burlington Northern. I was born in Joliet, IL where the BN is. [:)]

1. ATSF
2. BN
3. CBQ

Always had ATSF trainsets as a child, though I have a large fondness for the BN color scheme.

Not sure how I feel about the many different BNSF schemes, wi***hey would choose one and stick with it, then I could decide [:)]

Long before the Burlington Northern was cobbled together, there was only one railroad that ran from Chicago to California.

BN - Because when I was little it was my favorite color, had my initials in the logo (N. B.), and would pass on the line where my dad and I would "check the crossing." I love that cascade green [:)]

GN comes in a close second, due to the excellent use of a goat in its logo [8D]

AT&SF!
"By many measures, the U.S. freight rail system is the safest, most efficient and cost effective in the world." - Federal Railroad Administration, October, 2009. I'm just your average, everyday, uncivilized howling "anti-government" critic of mass government expenditures for "High Speed Rail" in the US. And I'm gosh darn proud of that.

BN.

I grew up along the BN Aurora Sub but a year after I moved to Polo the BN/ATSF merger happened so I only was able to see pure BN trains for a year.I did still see mostly BN engines for the next vew years after the merger anyway.

Burlington Northern.
I realy can't explain why I like the BN. Mabe it had something to do with time era that I was born in. Other than I realy have no clue. Mabe it's the rich history from the Burlington Route. Allan.

BNSF Fans: What is your favorite predecessor road?
Posted by BNSF4ever on Thursday, July 14, 2005 8:02 PM
This one is for my fellow BNSF fans. What is your favorite predecessor road and why?

* Great Northern
* Northern Pacific
* Chicago, Burlington & Quincy
* Spokane, Portland & Seattle
* Fort Worth & Denver
* Colorado & Southern
* Frisco (SLSF)
* Burlington Northern
* ATSF
* Some other smaller road I've forgotten (!)

My first model train (Tyco) set had Burlington Northern freight cars and a locomotive so I was a BN fan from age 6 onwards. I was also a CB&Q fan even though they were gone by the time I showed up on this Earth. I love the silver F units and the Budd Zephyr cars to this day.

I love passenger trains, historic and modern. So when BNSF comprises the railroads that brought us the Empire Builder, North Coast Limited, California Zephyr, and Chiefs, how could the modern railroad not be my favorite?
