I've often thought of developing a second identity so I can argue both sides. So far, I use the same name but arge both sides in separate threads.

Well a quick look at the ISPs that people log in from can easily see if there are double username posters.

Other than post padding or "star chasing" I think this forum is in pretty good shape otherwize.

Same thoughts, same Internet, same time:

Isn't that what used to be called "parallel intellectual development"?

Or "Jungian racial* consciousness," if you're feeling REALLY persnickety!
____
* "racial" here means human race, no particular skin color or ethnicity.

Dan, I remember one time you posting that dunkerstein (yeah, I know that's not his name, but I like it better) had several aliases. How do you figure out who posters like him are the same guy?

Elementary my dear Watson.....I can't give away all the trade secrets, but it has alot to do with writing styles..that particular gent has used at least six names, not to mention differing names on the emails/letters he has posted......

In addition to the fact that he brings up the same types of topics.

I finally started looking at more and more of these posts as being amusing too, dave, and ignored my first reaction to send back a p.o.ed answer. It's a whole lot more fun that way. I don't understand the math threads either.

I just try to avoid the goofy topics altogether. Especially the ones that contain lots of math calculations that don't make much sense. But sometimes I find them amusing, like the detective cinder____ thread.

That's very often a hallmark of their posts - being (or seeming) unwilling to accept other points of view. At least for the purposes of their rabble-rousing. It frustrates daylights out of the well-meaning folks who are honestly trying to point out the solution/correct answer/etc. At least until they realize what's going on. Been there.

Grammar, spelling, their writing style. I don't spend any time trying to figure out who has aliases but sumtimes I notice similarities and have to wonder.

I think you should have to identify yourself to be on a forum. People should be accountable for what they say. [8D]

Don't overlook the potential that established members some times (even ofter, in some instances) create these "sock puppet" 3rd person personalities, just to screw around with other members who rub them the wrong way.

It happens that way an awful lot.

Suppose member "A" is an extremely popular member among all members

Suppose member "B" is as well.

Suppose a personality conflict brews up between A & B.

A cannot pick on B directly without perturbing some of B's friends (and looking like spectacular jerk) so,..he does the next best thing..He invents a new membername to play the "jerk" against his adversary..

There are dozens of variations on this old game.

Over on the GR forum we had one clown who claimed to be a big name exec for a very famous rodent based enterprise (but complained about not being able to afford LGB) , he would post stupid often vitriol comments directed at certain members, and when he started getting negative replies from others, would create other alias and say things like "why is every attacking so-and-so" turned out the guy had 5 alias's before he was nuked off the forum, I wont even go into the events over on the CTT forum cause the goofus there still shows up from time to time.

But all in all this is a very civilized forum. On some of my work related forums there are some real jerks. And on those forums there is all kind of swearing and lude conduct.

Trolling: when someone joins a web forum with the specific intention of posting controversial topics and creating conflicts in a previously peaceful forum - such individuals are known as Trolls. A good example would be the periodic "I love MTH" posts over on the Model Railroader forum, the starter of the topic (who usually only joined a day or so before posting it) usually disappears rapidly after posting them!

Even if you don't notice the join date, the post count (almost always in the single digits, more often than not 1) is usually a tip-off. Either that or the syntax and spelling. (That's syntax, not sin tax!)

A few of them have stuck around for a while, raising cain. Eventually they, too, disappear, occasionally with a gentle nudge from the forum-meister.

Sometimes sitting behind a puter screen, you feel like you are the only one that is thinking a certain thought. Then lo and behold - someone else thinks the same thing!
In fact, many people!
