MIKEYGAW
You mentioned the two railroads in Mexico as being class 1.
Is this listing part of the American ***'n. of Railroads list ?
I was unaware that Mexico was part of the AAR ?

Conrail, as one usually refers to it, was a very large railroad corporation which was created by the merger of a number of eastern railroads -- NYC, PRR, and a number of others. Conrail Shared Assets was created when much of the system was purchased by CSX and NS, as one of the conditions of the whole deal. There might be several reasons cited for its creation, but in my view the major one -- and a vaild one -- was that in several locations as noted in other posts it was much easier to provide for multiple access and transfers by creating CSA than by trying to arrange what would have been an unholy mess of trackage rights, haulage rights, run-through privileges and who knows what else.

Actually from what I gather directly from the Conrail Website at www.conrail.com , Conrail exists on a much smaller basis with the shared asset locations of north New Jersey/Philly, South New Jersey and Detroit and works as a switching agent for CSX and Norfolk Southern in these locations. So I guess Conrail is considered a terminal operation now.

Conrail Shared assets are three sections of Conrail shared between NS and CSX. One is in the Detroit area and the other is Northern New Jersey and the third runs SE from Camden.
CP (ex Soo Line) and CN (ex GTW and IC) are also classed as class ones in the USA.
There is one more class one, CNO&TP.

Amtrak is also a Class I railroad (in definition only, unfortunately).

There are currently 9 class 1 railroads in North America, 5 in the US (CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, KCS), 2 in Canada (CN, CP), and 2 in Mexico (Ferrocarril Mexicano and Grupo Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana).

And while Conrail itself is gone, there still is Conrail Shared Assets, which controls lines in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Detroit, although it doesn't meet the qualifications to be called a Class 1 railroad.
