Maybe this why the BNSF wants you stay a "safe" distance from the ROW when railfanning. A BNSF cop once told me at least 8'/10' from the ROW[:o)][:D][:)]

Two UP trains collide
(The following article by Russ Krebs was posted on the Fremont Tribune website on May 3.)

FREMONT, Neb. -- Two Union Pacific employees were injured when a train they were in struck the rear end of another Union Pacific (UP) train at about 11:25 p.m. Monday near North Bend.

They were taken by separate air ambulances to an Omaha Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, said Mark Davis, UP spokesman. Current conditions are unknown and names of the two were not released.

He said the accident occurred about 15 miles west of Fremont.

The train that was struck was either stationary or moving slowly, said Chief Deputy Tom Tamke of the Dodge County Sheriff's Department.

The rear train was traveling from Wyoming to Waukegan, Ill., and the front train was going from Wyoming to Clinton, Iowa.

"(The impact) resulted in two locomotives and six rail cars being derailed," Davis said. "One locomotive lost about 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel."

This morning, the fuel was being cleaned up with contaminated dirt being removed and replaced with clean dirt.

Davis said about 160 feet of two tracks were damaged. This morning, workers were repairing the tracks that average 72 trains per day. He said one track should be open by 2 p.m. and the second line open by 4 p.m. today.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

U.S. Highway 30 was shut down for a short time early this morning while emergency crews took care of the injured employees. The highway is currently open, but the Nebraska State Patrol is providing traffic control as UP brings in more equipment.
