Is the 6925 still in Chamberlain SD, and what kind of shape is it in? Was it just left to rot when the Dakota Southern pulled back to Mitchell a few years ago?Does Chamberlain have any rail service?[?]

I think #6900 was dead, but it still looked really cool. That was an AWFUL lot of locomotive on the front end of a business train! And I bet they had big enough fuel tanks, even for Mr. Krebs! [:p][:D][;)]

Yes, two DDA40Xs are WAY cool. The only thing missing was a fast forty sandwitched in between. [8D]

Hello,

Yes, the 6925 is still in Chamberlain, but is in pretty bad shape. The Dakota Southern bought it only for it's massive fuel tank which they used for fuel storage(not sure if they still use it or not).

[Does Chamberlain have any rail service?/quote]
Not anymore. When BN changed their tariff structure in the mid to late 90's,it effectively shut Dakota Southern out of the grain business[xx(]. Today the Dakota Southern does contract car storage and serves a box factory in Mitchell.

If anyone has more questions, I'd be happy to help[8D]

I never knew that it was on pontoons, but as far as I know, it currently has concrete pillers, but I'll have to check.

The former Milw River bridge at Chamberlain is on concrete piers. Several deck girder spans near the shore and a few through truss spans over the center of the river. I've driven by about 30 times, including 2 weeks ago. The tracks west of Chamberlain are pretty weedy. Look for a related post from this past weekend regarding the state of SD selling trackage to BNSF in exchange for some open rail access. That might - might have a chance of bringing some lift back to Dakota Southern by allowing access to carriers other than BNSF at Mitchell. Here's a link to a cool panaramic pic of that bridge. DD-40's with a fast 40 would be good, but I'll never forget 2 DD's with a GP-9 sandwiched on a westbound hotshot at Apple Valley CA. 1975. It seemed that little Geep was giving all she had to keep up.
