Normally the traffic gets busy on Wednesday afternoon and slows down either late Sunday or early Monday. The railroads like to get their traffic into the destination yard on Sunday's if possible. Locals are busy on Mondays and Tuesdays to clean out the yard.

Wow, thanks guys...

Unforuntatly, I am stuck going up Sunday/Monday. Just works out with my work schedule and everything else. But thanks for the tip Chad, makes sense.

SPED, I like your theroy, kinda what I was hopeing for too, guess we will see.

MP173, Thanks for the heads up on the cafe. I will keep that in mind when head up there. Actually, we are going to camp about 20 miles west of Flagstaff. When the girl and I went exploring in Feb, we found a couple of great spots to camp. One of them, with permission of the land owner, we camped like 50 feet from the tracks. (Yeah, it was loud, it was an expeirence for sure) So I will be taking the kiddo to another place we found that will put us about 100 yrds away across a nice field from the tracks. Should be great.... I am hopeing to be sitting there by the camp fire with a train going past us on a gentle curve...

We leave Sunday morningish. When we get back, I will do a write up of how it went and what we saw. Ill post some pics in my webshots section.

Best Regards.
John k

P.S. Chad, MP173(ed) and DHarmon.. Seems like I have been bumping into you guys alot lately..... So , uh.... Howdy there! Now its official.

Best Regards, Big John

The buisiest day that I can tell is Friday. I like to railfan on that day when I can.

John,
I have spent a lot of time railfanning the BNSF between Cajon and Needles. And have been out to Flagstaff many times. This line is generaly very busy but traffic levels do drop off sun-tues. This is a reflection of lower traffic originations on the weekends. I wouldn't worry about it too much. After all a slow day on the BNSF transcon beats record days on most other lines. But given a choice I would opt for friday night into saturday over sat-sun or sun-mon.

Good luck
Chad

if you go to Flagstaff, then go to the Crown Railroad Cafe on the east side of town.

You can sit in there and eat, look at all of the railroad signage in the restaurant and watch the action right outside. Hopefully the model train will be working on the inside.

It is very hard to say about the volume of trafic. I would say since Monday is the next day to your plans there should be a considerable amount of TOFC moving west so that it is ready for P/U on Monday AM. [:o)][:D][:)]

Well last time I took I-40 a little over a year ago, it was pretty much non-stop. Same with I-10 through west TX, NM & AZ.

OK,

I am planning on taking the kid camping up along the BNSF TransCon Line this weekend around Flagstaff Arizona. But I was thinking of going up Sundayday/night then come home nooni***he next day, Monday due to work and such. Question is, should I expect the line to be slower on traffic since it is Sunday day / night or does it matter on line like that? I know during the week, it can be quite busy? Any input would be greatful since I will have a 5 year old with me. he is great watchign trains but the waiting part kills him and me......
